単位というものが、我々の知っているものから知らないものまで、こんなにあるということに、単純に驚かされます。
その単位も厳密に定義されているものから、慣例で使われているものまで様々です。
例えば「１ｍはクリプトン８６原子が発する光が１秒の２９９７９２４５８分の１に真空中を伝わる行程の長さ」といったものから繊維の質量で使用されるらしい「番手」や面積の「エーカー」などといったものまで。

興味深かったのは、特に長さの単位について。そもそも人の実感から単位になっていたものが多いみたいですね。
例えば一里は「人が歩いて大体一時間くらいの距離」がスタートだったらしいとのこと。なので、平地の一里より山地の一里のほうが短かったようです。絶対的な距離としては各地バラバラでも、運用上は「歩いて一時間の距離」の方が旅に掛かる時間の目安としては便利だったんでしょうね。

世界的に単位が厳密に定義され、統一されていくことのメリットは大きいのは確かです。一方で、こういった実感ベースの距離の感覚が我々から消えていくのもなんだか寂しい気はしました。個人的な感想ですが、どんどん画一化が進む、今の経済のグローバリゼーションと思いが重なるところもありました。

そのように色々と考えることも多い本でしたし、ものの数え方とあわせて自分の子供には伝えていきたいと思う１冊でした。お勧めです。

さまざまな「単位」の由来や定義をわかりやすく紹介している豆知識本。日常生活で使っているものから初めて名前を聞く単位までそれこそいろいろなものが紹介されている。現在の五円玉がなぜその重さになったのかなど「読んで納得」の挿話もおもしろい。著者は現役の中学校教諭。丁寧でソフト、わかりやすい語り口はさすが。好感がもてる。中学生レベルで理解可能。

~一言で言えばトリビアの宝庫です。
タイトル通り、171の単位に関する基礎知識がずらりと並んだ事典。
ケチをつけるなら「“新”知識」というところくらいでしょうか。
別に新しくもなんともない、従来からの決まりなのですから…。

最近になった国際単位の認定に入ったり外れたり、という意味においては
新しいことにも多少意味はありますが…。

も~~ちろん単位の基準数値以外にも、他の単位との換算方法や由来
（これがトリビアの元）なども載っていて、「へー」というだけでなく、
何かの時に引っ張り出して参照するのにも最適。

図書館で借りるのではなく、是非中古でもいいから一冊持っておきたい本です。~
