　パラパラとページをめくってエッセイのいくつかを読み返してみると、とても２０年前に書かれたものとは思えない。書かれてあることに一々頷いてしまう。エッセイ集なので頭から読む必要はなく気軽に読める。

　河合隼雄は日本文化への言及が多く、右翼的な考えを持つと人だと考える人間がたまにいる。しかし、これは誤解である。

河合は本書のタイトルを「日本人とアイデンティティ」とし、「日本人のアイデンティティ」にしなかったと述べている。これは、アイデンティティは本来、あらゆる人間が持つため「日本人だけに限定されたアイデンティティ」はそもそも存在しないためだという。

本書は日本文化の肯定的・否定的側面に触れた上で、日本文化圏に生きる人にとっての日本文化の位置付け・意味、そして課題を書いている。読み終えると思わず自分の側にいる人間（日本人）の行動を批判的・複眼的に考えざるを得なくなり、海外の人はどう生きてているのだろうと好奇心も湧いた。

海外に在住し、自分のアジア的・日本的な要素を体感した人には、是非、米国在住の日系アメリカ人の箇所を読んでください。自分のアイデンティティを考える上でのきっかけになると思います。

5.0 out of 5 stars 読後、サブタイトルの『心理療法家の着想』の方が、タイトルにふさわしく感じた, 2006/5/18
河合氏の著作は、大きく分けると論文物と、語り言葉物と、対話物に分けられるかと思う。本書は語り言葉物でとっつき易い。また話題が豊富でテーマも縦横無尽に取り上げられている。最後の「夢多き人生を生きる」では心が和む。
