ふんわりとした柔らかな雰囲気の中に、寂しさや辛さを内包した不思議な物語です。

最初のほのぼのとした街や人々の描写が、主人公のマーレンを始めとした登場人物たちの秘密や裏側が読者に明らかになるにつれて、なにかはっきりしないまでも苦いものを含ませ始めます。切ない印象を与えるエピソードが混じりつつ、更なる展開の下巻へと続く緊張感を孕んでいきます。

いつの間に追い詰められていたんだろうと読後に驚くほど、気づかないうちに切迫していくその物語は、ストーリーテリングの味わいを感じさせてくれます。
