前作までは出会いから別れまでを描いたことでひとつの終わりを見せた。番外編はあったもののこの巻ではあのラストからのメイがいかに立ち上がるか、というところがひとつのポイントだったのではないだろうか。ならば、どう評価すればいいのか迷う。
あの話で終わりではなかった、、といわれても、、というのが正直なところだ、が、やはり上手い。
精神的な葛藤のシーンは流石だと思う。

しかし本当に大変なのはこのラストシーンから始まるはずである。
これまで以上の困難が待ち構えているはずなのだが。
…続きがあるのかもしれぬ。であればぜひ。
そここそが『あらしのよるに』の本当のラストかもしれない。

最終巻にしては、なんか中途半端だなあ…
読み終えてから、そんな感想がすぐにわき上がってきました。

もちろんシリーズを無理に終わらせる必要なんてありません。
ただ前作で一度は完結編と謡っており、中身もそれだけの気合いが
感じられただけに、この作品が出たことついては複雑な気持ちです。

前作「ふぶきのあした」で納得された方は、正直言って読む必要はないです。
逆に、前作にやるせなさを感じていた方は、本作で救われることでしょう。

ここでシリーズが描いてきたテーマを思い返してみると、

『食う者と食われる者のあいだで友情は成立するか』
『友情のためには、世間の常識やタブーを破れるか』
『互いの命が危険な中、どこまで友を信用できるか』

といったように、どんどん深化し続けてきました。
この流れからみると、避けて通れないのが

『相手がこの世にいなくなっても、友情は続くのか』

というテーマだったと個人的に思うのですが、
ウマく避けられた気がします。

「ふぶきのあした」で終わりだと思っていたので、この「まんげつのよるに」が出てほっとしました。メイのひたむきな心が伝わってきて泣きそうになりました。ガブを思う気持ちが痛いほどです。これからこの二人が仲良く、ずっと友だちでいてくれることを願って最後のページを閉じました。
