「闘蛇編」「王獣編」から１１年後の話。
カザルムで教導師になっているエリンに、
闘蛇の大量死の調査の依頼が舞い込んだところから今回の話は始まります。

どうして闘蛇はある時大量死するのか、
母ソヨンはや霧の民は何を隠していたのかが少しずつ解明されていきます。
調査をすすめる中で、
人の手による闘蛇の繁殖の技が
隣国ラーザにもれてしまっている可能性があることが分かったため、
真王セィミヤからとうとう王獣部隊を編制するよう要請されたエリン…
ここから彼女の葛藤が始まります。

元堅き楯（セ・ザン）の夫イアルと息子のジェシも否応なく巻き込まれていき、
どのように話が展開していくのか目が離せません。

驚きました。少女のイメージだったエリンが一気に３０代の母になって再登場！
そんな設定で大丈夫？と一瞬横切る不安は、５分後には吹き飛んで新たな物語に引き込まれていました。
もともと多国間の歴史や国のあり方など社会問題への提言もあったストーリーが壮大な歴史絵巻となり、前作の２巻を取り込み吸収した。上橋先生の安定した創作力に大きな拍手です。前作と時間が開いていることで、源氏物語のように世代交替してもくり返される人間の性などを読者もエリンの母、そして息子と３代の人間に生まれ変わって関わりながら読むことができる。テレビアニメの展開と重ねることで上橋ワールドが一気にあなたの頭上に広がりますよ。
そう、そして王獣が空を舞う！

３、４巻ではリョザ神王国と他国との緊迫した関係が浮上してくるため、
エリンを取り巻く世界はさらに過酷なものとなっていきます。
味わいもほろ苦さを増しています。

そのため、読んでいてつらい部分もあるのですが、
上橋菜穂子さんの生み出す世界は圧倒的にリアルで、
登場人物たちも単純なステレオタイプの人間は出てこず、
みんな複雑な色合いを帯びた生身の人間という匂いがして
引き込まれます。

エリンの夫が誰なのか、後の方に行くまで明かされないので、
彼女の重荷を共に背負い、共に歩いていけるのは一人しかいないと
わかってはいても、いらぬ心配をしてしまいました。

エリンとイアルの関係が馴れ合ったものではなく、いまだに
恋人同士のような熱さを持っているのがそそられます。
二人が結ばれるまでのことは断片的に回想で出てはきますが、
この際、外伝で読みたいと思ってしまいました。
