’０８年度の本屋大賞と山本周五郎賞を受賞した『ゴールデンスランバー』から約１年ぶりの長編。’０５年の『魔王』の続編とのことだが、あれから５０年ほど経った２１世紀半ば過ぎの物語で、関連性はさほど強くないので、独立した物語として読むことが出来る。

「実家に忘れてきました。何を？勇気を」と、のっけから伊坂テイストにあふれるフレーズではじまる作品である。
渡辺拓海は、多忙を極めるシステムエンジニア。ある日、課長から失踪した社員にかわってプロジェクトを継続実行するよう命じられる。その日から彼の周りで奇妙な事件が続く。先輩社員の失踪にはじまって、同僚の誤認逮捕、上司の自殺、不倫相手の失踪、妻に不倫調査を雇われた男の家の火事など、不穏な出来事のオンパレードだ。しかも、それらは、パソコンである言葉を検索した者に降りかかるようなのだ。
この謎を解くべく、渡辺、同僚そして彼の妻や、失踪していた先輩社員も加わって、一大冒険活劇が繰り広げられる。

本書では、あいかわらず、「人を喰ったような」伊坂ワールドは健在だが、書き下ろしとは異なり、もともとは週刊コミック雑誌の連載小説だっただけに、各章の終わりの、次回予告っぽい期待感と、全５６章のそれぞれに読みどころがあり、ファンとしては充分楽しむことができた。

それなりに楽しみながら読んだものの、もしもこの小説をそのまんま
映像化したら、かなりつまらないものになるだろうなあと感じながら読了。

もちろん、小説の楽しみ方は、映画のそれとは違うわけで、この本を
手に取ったほとんどの人は、伊坂流のオサレな表現を堪能することが
目的なのでしょうが。

ただそれほど伊坂に思い入れのない人間にしてみれば、彼独特のまわりくどい
言い回し(大抵は伏線になっているんですけど)は物語のスピード感を殺して
いるようにしか感じらずに、読んでいてたまに苛々します。

とはいえ前半部分は、「渡辺君はこれからどうなってしまうんだろうか」という
期待感でワクワクできたことは事実。なのに後半の展開にはガッカリです。
登場人物の動きが漫画的というか場当たり的なご都合主義で説得力を欠きます。

それと、連載小説ということもあるのでしょうが、同じ描写や説明が何度も
出てきて冗長に感じます。2/3程度のボリュームにまとめてくれれば、また
印象は違ったものになっていたかもしれません。

初出はモーニング2007年18号〜2008年26号。2008年10月16日リリース。ぼくは幸せにも作者のサイン入り・落款入りを手に入れた。

作家になる前はSEをしていたという伊坂幸太郎の『過去』を生かしての作品になっている。つまりプログラムが分かる人間が読むと随所に響く。LZH圧縮が出てきて、ふーむ、やるな、と思った。LZHがここで出てきてzipやsitでないことのおしゃれさが芥川・直木賞の審査員に解るとは思えない。既に表現の多様性が従来の文学のキャパシティを超えているんだな、と痛感した。

これで現時点の伊坂幸太郎作品を全部読了したのだが、正直な気持ちを書くと、はっきり言って最近の作品は、未消化・未計画のまま世に出ていると思う。苦言を言うようだが、もう少し貯めて出すべきだろう。時間軸をずらしながら並列的に展開させるストーリーが超一流。台詞が超一流であるだけに手抜き・息抜きは極めて残念だ。そして『超能力』とかSFを書いて欲しくない。それが伊坂幸太郎の目指すべき方向性だと、言い切りたい。
