　冒険・ミステリー作家の真保氏が歴史小説、しかも本能寺の変で織田信長と屠ってしまった明智光秀を主人公にしたストーリーを書いた。
　歴史小説は基本的に史実どおり進むので、その中にいかに著者の個性を引き出すかがポイントになる。今回の真保氏の力量やいかに？
　明智光秀が清々しく潔く描かれている。またサイドストーリーとして光秀に仕える忍び･小平太が絡んでくる。展開が面白い。実に見事である。☆☆☆☆☆にしたいのだが、下巻もあるので、読破した後に総評としてみたい。
　新しい明智光秀像を描ききっている。上巻としては合格点である。すばらしい。

おそらく真保裕一初の歴史物だと思うが、ハードカバー上下二巻の大作を読破した。正直、最初は真保裕一が歴史物なんて書けるのかなと疑いつつ読み進めたためか、いつもとタッチが違うせいか読書スピードが遅く、うまく流れに乗れなかったが、上巻の1/3を過ぎたあたりから引き込まれ、いつもの真保小説と同様に最後まで本を手放すことができなかった。

この本、戦国時代末期から安土桃山時代の世の中を描いているのだが、歴史上は逆賊とされている明智光秀を正義、織田信長を悪として設定し、通説に疑問を呈しているところがまず面白い。織田信長が自らの権力を増やしていくとともに権力を更に増やすことに執着し、部下の武将たち、民衆への気遣いが減っていき、それに対して明智光秀が徐々に懸念を増していく様はストーリーとして自然であり、歴史とも符合するのではないか。さらに面白いのは歴史上あまり明らかでない戦場における忍者たちの活躍が大きく取り上げられているところ。明智光秀は忍者をうまく使って武功を挙げていたとのこと。題名の「覇王の番人」は、想像するに織田信長の番人であった明智光秀、織田信長の後に覇王となった明智光秀の番人であった忍者たちという二重の意味を持たせているのではないか。

天文17年，明智光秀は冷えた朝の空気の中，蝮と恐れられる君主：斉藤道三から美濃の虎：織田信長の話を聞く。光秀と慕い合う娘：帰蝶を信長へ輿入れすると同時に道三から稲葉山における任を解かれる。ここから，光秀と信長の長い物語が始まる･･･

室町後半からの戦国時代を描いた物語であるが，主軸が明智光秀とそれに使える忍：小平太を中心に描かれていく，歴史に疎い自分が故にまず，登場人物の整理に時間がかかった。ただし，小平太の下りに関しては同作家の作品の特徴を大いに受け継いだ下りがおおく，大変読みやすい。それに引かれてそれ以外の部分もスムーズに入ってくるようになり，加速度的に面白くなってきた。下巻が大変楽しみである。
