「パンク侍」→「告白」→「宿屋めぐり」と、魂への洞察力はより深く、今までに増してよりグダグダの町田節から時折放たれる真実真正の言葉は今までに増してより鋭さを増し、読了後は心にズシリと相当の手ごたえを感じること間違いなし。
「パンク侍」では、斜に構え偽をなす主人公、「告白」では、ある種の無垢さから運命に翻弄される主人公を見事に描き切りました。そして今作では「主」に怖れをなし忠義を図りながらも、その真意を汲み取ろうとするあまり自分を見失う主人公が登場します。人生とは、生きるとはどういうことなのか。最後には、作者ははっきりと一つの結論を「主」の口より語らせています。しかしそれをどう解釈するか、それはまさにこの602ページの物語を読んだあなたの人生そのものにより大きく異なるものとなるでしょう。主人公が「主」に試されるが如く、読者は作者に試されることになるでしょう。
僕はこの物語を、これから何年かおきに繰り返し読むことになると思います。傑作！

名作「告白」にはおよばないと思いますが、町田康しか書けない、ぶっ飛んだ世界を展開してくれます。
年を経るに従い、物語の世界が深化してきているのは素晴らしいのですが、笑いの要素が少なくなってきているのは、ちょっとさみしい感じもしますね。

町田康の作品は大好きでほぼ全部読みましたが、これはどちらかと言えば失敗作という印象です。町田節が炸裂していて面白い部分もあるものの、全体としては散漫な印象を免れず、また町田氏自身の自我が前面に出過ぎているような気がして、小説としては出来が悪いように感じました。「告白」がよかっただけにかなり期待して読んだのですが、わたし的にはハズレでした。どこかで町田氏ご本人が、「小説を書くときは一作に集中しないとだめ」とおっしゃっていましたが、これがそのだめな例かな？と思いました。もしくは時間をかけすぎて収拾がつかなくなったのかも知れませんが。ほかの町田作品を読んだことのない方にはお勧めしません。
