　初めて自分の庭を作ろうとする人にも、すでにある庭を、家のリフォームと同じように、現在の暮らしによりマッチングしたものや、ローメンテナンスなものに作り直したい人にも、庭についてなら当分はこの一冊で十分です。庭からベランダまでの作庭の基本から、樹木から下草、花の選び方、剪定や病虫害、道具選びまで煩雑になりそうな内容が、高画質で豊富な写真とわかりやすいイラストで、これ以上はシンプルにはなりえないと思えるほどうまく編集されています。
　大図鑑と銘打ってはありますが、各植物の品種名だけをできるだけ多く知りたい人には、やや物足りないかも知れません。品種の羅列だけではなく、そこかしこに素敵な庭の実例がちりばめてあり、パラパラとめくって見るだけでも楽しめます。庭造りの素材や技術やセンスアップには必要十分なガイドです。
　一見初心者向けの本に見えますが、ガーデニングを幼稚園に例えれば、年少さんより年中さん向けかも知れません。初心者には難しいという意味ではなく、少し庭で苦労をした人の方がこの本の便利さがわかるという意味です。初心者の時からこの本が身近にあれば日向好きを日陰でいじけさせたり、剪定が追いつかない樹木を植えたあげくに切り倒したりという失敗は避けられるかもしれません。切り過ぎて花が着かない花木や、コンパクトに仕立て直すのが難しいと敬遠されがちなコニファー類までイラストや写真の案内どおりにやれば何とかなりそうです。
　この本が偏りのない素敵な内容になった理由はPart・１の筆者名（ナチュラルガーデンのポール・スミザー、バラの村田晴夫、他）を見ただけでも納得。定価は安くはありませんが、内容を見れば手元に置きたくなります。星五つです。

5.0 out of 5 stars お庭を植物や樹木で充実させたい方に, 2009/9/21
この夏にお庭のハード面と樹木少々をを業者さんに造作してもらい、自分でもマイガーデンを充実させたいなぁと考えていました。手持ちのバラに合うようにと下草等をピックアップする際に、それぞれの植物のカラー写真と育て方や手入れのポイントなど、素人の私にもわかりやすい本でした。ステキに植栽されたお庭の実例写真が前半にあり、季節ごとの花木、落葉、常緑の樹木、果樹、季節ごとの宿根草、下草、つる類などなど、見ているだけでも楽しく、お庭を描く参考になる、バイブル的な本だと思います。
