少女の一人称で語られる物語、描かれる世界は昭和初期を思わせる農村的風景、 世界感を支配する「呪力」に架空の生物たち。なんとなく宮崎駿的ファンタジー を思い浮べながら読みはじめた。

ローレンツの動物行動学に発想を得たという、オオカミなど凶暴と言われる動 物以上に同族への攻撃抑制ができない人間の不完全さが全編に渡って描かれて いる。描かれる人間の業は、後半に向けて繰り返し更に救いの無い形でより深 く描かれていく。

かなり悲惨な展開の中で主人公の強さということが物語でも出てくるが、どち らかというとこれは展開上の必要性で与えられた属性でテーマは人間の業の救 いの無さにあるように読める。

そして、最後の最後で更に救いのない形で世界を反転させてみせる結末ははSF としてもホラーとしても見事と言える。これだけの長編で膨大な伏線とエピソー ドを張り巡らしながら、どれもが無駄なく論理立って繋っていき、なおかつ読 後にテーマが一本の軸でブレれていないと読者を唸らせる作者の力量は並のも のではない。

基本的にはホラーな人なのでかなり描写がグロな部分があるが、それが受容で きる方にはお勧めの一冊。ページ数はかなりあるが一気に読めてしまう。

久しぶりの貴志祐介の作品。すぐに買いました。

貴志祐介の作品では初めて（だと思いますが）「呪力」という非科学的な力、
バケネズミという架空の生物が登場し、そのバケネズミが人間に牙を剥きます。
その攻防や、それ以前のありふれたように見える生活が大人に管理されている
という恐怖、不条理さがよく描かれており、読みがいがあります。

ＳＦ要素が強いので、それなりに想像力が必要ですが、その辺は貴志祐介の
作品らしく、細かい所まで書いてくれているので想像するのに苦労することはな
いと思います。

個人的には面白かったですし、例によって最後に驚くような事実が分かるので、
読んで損はないと思いますが、以前の貴志祐介の作品とは多少趣が違うので
評価が分かれると思います。
この方は、『黒い家』『クリムゾンの迷宮』のような人間の究極的ともいえる欲望、
『青の炎』のような切なる願いを書かせたら天才的だと思っているので、できれば
現実世界の恐怖などを書いてもらいたかったな、とも思いました。

（この作品は何も前知識を入れないまま読むことをおすすめします。下手にレビューサイトは見ないほうがいいですよ！）

人を選ぶ小説です。過去の作品の天使の囀りやクリムゾンの迷宮が好きな人におすすめです。

自分は特に活字中毒というわけでもないので、退屈するとすぐに本を投げ出してしまうのですが、上下巻怒涛の如く一気に読みました。
下巻なんて、丁度その時腹痛で本当は本なんか読む気はしなかったんですが
二転三転どころではない展開から目が離せず、痛いお腹を押さえつつ読んでしまいました。

ブログなどの評判を読むと、賛否両論別れるようです。「4000円ドブに捨てた」という意見もあれば
「安過ぎる買い物」と大絶賛する声も。私は間違いなく後者です。

上下巻1000ページを超える長編ですが、それだけ楽しめると思って逆に喜ぶべきです。
