駿河で同心の家に生まれた与七郎（十返舎一九）が、大阪の材木問屋の養子に入り浄瑠璃作家になり、更に江戸へ出て質屋の養子に入って黄表紙本の作者になり、そこから旅立って「東海道中膝栗毛」を書き、名前をあげるまでの半生を描いています。

何のヴィジョンもなく、ただふらふらと旅立ちたいと思う心が、与七郎には常にあります。作者は、そんな彼の気持ちを「太吉」と言う別人格を登場させて表現します。このもう一人の人物を内に持つことによって、彼の表面的な言葉とは裏腹な本心を表現しているのです。多重人格的なこの表現によって、彼の苦悩が読む側に迫ってきます。

そして、この本心が彼をして「旅の本」を書かせることになります。それが「東海道中膝栗毛」な訳です。
それまでは山東京伝を越えられず、その亜流でしかなかった彼が、その世界から旅立った瞬間です。このとき初めて、十返舎一九が成立したのでしょう。

この独自性を見出してゆく産みの苦しみが、実に楽しく書かれています。そのさらりとした文章で、深刻な心の動きを見事に映し出している作品です。

と同時に、当時の江戸の様子や戯作の世界や、様々なエピソードなど、意外な事実を知ることが出来、楽しく読むことが出来る作品です。

といえば俳聖松尾芭蕉ですが、この作品の主人公、十返舎一九にも同じようなところを感じます。
素直で思いやりもある。何にでもそれなりの才能を持ち、そつなくこなせるのだけれど長続きしない。飽いてしまうその悪い癖をどうにかしろ！と怒鳴りつけたい。ともに所帯を持つ女たちが可愛く描かれ、反面、一九にそこはかとない憎しみを感じることもありますが、この男をつなぎ止めておくこと自体が「無理なこと」なのかと、やきもきすると同時に清々しく見送ってやりたい、そんな達観した心持ちにさせてくれる男の物語です。新聞紙上に連載されていたものを読んでいて、歌舞伎にとても詳しい作家さんとは知っていましたが、今回は香遊びや人形浄瑠璃など江戸後期の文化も味わえて面白かったです。

十返舎一九が東海道中膝栗毛を書くまでの半生を描いた作品です。
当時の戯作者たちや版元（出版社）の人間たちの姿が生き生きと描かれています。
博識ぶりもさすがで、実に読みやすいと思います。
