1928年大阪府生まれ。1947年樟蔭女子専門学校国文科卒業。1964年「感傷旅行(センチメンタル・ジャーニィ)」で、第50回芥川賞受賞。1987年「花衣ぬぐやまつわる…」で第26回女流文学賞受賞。1993年「ひねくれ一茶」で第27回吉川英治文学賞受賞。1994年第42回菊池寛賞受賞。1998年「道頓堀の雨に別れて以来なり」で第50回読売文学賞、第26回泉鏡花文学賞、第3回井原西鶴賞を受賞。その他、1995年に紫綬褒章受章。2000年には文化功労者となる。古典や評伝、小説、エッセイに作品多数(本データはこの書籍が刊行された当時に掲載されていたものです)

ずっと探していたこの本が、復刻版で出ました！

シリーズの2部作以降（私的生活、苺をつぶしながら）は先に読んでいて、
こうなったきっかけは何だったのだろう、と
5年以上気になっていたのでした。

30年前も今も女性の気持ち、とか、男女の問題とか、
なんら変わらないのだなあ、と驚くとともに、
「そうそう、わかる」「そういうことある！」と
深くうなずきつつ読み終わりました。

最後は、「こうなっちゃう気持ちもわかる」と思いつつ、
2作目に続く流れに、ちょっと涙してしまいました。

折角復刻したので、2冊目、3冊目もハードカバー版も買います。

ところで、本著を手にしたら、カバーをはずして観察してみてほしい。
凝った装丁なのです。

　田辺聖子氏の小説を読むのは始めてだったが、昔に書かれたとは思えないほど新しく感じる文章の描き方。主人公の意識のうちと科白の隔たりのなさや気分の移り変わり。自分の意識と寸分違わずするすると読めてしまう。そして完全に魅せられ、夢中になってしまった。
　これは３部作のはじめの物語。主人公と五郎の関係が主題となっているとみて読んでいたが、私にははじめから主人公と剛の恋物語であり、しかも女たらしである剛の主人公を想う痛々しい気持がリアルに伝わってくる。そしてただの「結局１人でいい」というありがちなラストに納まらず、読後は私自身にもともとあった絶望感の底が少しずつ浮いていくようで世界観が変わったよう。それは話の内容そのものもあるし、この方の世界のスケッチの仕方のせいでもある。この小説を通して見える世界そのものに、私は恋をした。今世界や人間関係(特に異性関係)がつまらない、と感じている人に、絶対お勧め！

田辺聖子作品はほとんど読破していますが、中でも印象に残る作品で
時間をおいて何度も読み返しています。
この作品の後編として「私的生活」「苺をつぶしながら」と続きます。
いずれも終始、関西弁ですがアンチ関西の人も是非読んでほしいです。

主人公の女性は決して若過ぎず、かといって中年にはまだ早い。
仕事も充実させつつ、もちろん男も欲しい。
どうしようもなく好きで手に入れたい男と、好いてくれる男。
ロマンチック過ぎず、現実にころがっていそうな面々が魅力的。
会話のテンポと男女のかけひきを楽しめる作品です。
