この作品は、水路と3つの塔が印象的なM町を訪れてそこで生活し始めた市川吾郎という男が何の目的でこの町を訪れ、そして殺されてしまったのかという謎をメインに話が展開していく。
内容はこの町に住んでいる人物の事件のかかわりや「あなた」と呼ばれる人間が市川吾郎が東京から突然失踪し、M町で殺されてしまった理由を調べにやってくる描写が描かれ、次第にこの町の本当の姿や事件の真相が明らかになっていく。
私は話の中盤辺りまでは、非常に楽しく読めたが、終盤に明らかになるM町の秘密が明らかになったところからつまらなく感じ出してしまった。M町の秘密はそれほど衝撃な内容ではなかった。
そして一番がっかりしたのは、市川吾郎という人物が殺された水無月橋の殺人事件の真相があまりにも現実離れし過ぎていたことである。この作品は中盤までは現実的な話だったが、終盤からSF、ファンタジー色がかなり濃くなりリアリティが無くなる。したがって推理小説を期待して読む人には絶対にお勧めできない。かなり結末がいい加減なので、ミステリ好きは必ずと言っていいほど、読んでがっかりするだろう。
個人的意見としては、恩田陸ファン以外の人はあまり楽しめないのではないかと思う。

3.0 out of 5 stars やや難解でいわゆる「推理小説」にないジャンル。好き嫌いが分かれるのでは？, 2008/9/28
冒頭の第一章から、かなり特徴がある。ある町の風景を、通常の小説のように鳥瞰図のように客観的に説明するのではなく、訪れた人物の目線を追う形で語る。これが、個人的には非常に読みづらかった。もちろん、この部分は物語の重要な部分なので、しっかりと読まなければならないのだが、ここで、なんだか、不思議な感覚に襲われる。更に、語り手がどんどん変わり、しかも、超常現象的なテーマも含まれ、物語はどんどん拡散してゆくような印象を与える。いわゆる「殺人」「謎解き」というつくりではなく、謎は舞台となる町の存在自体へと拡大してゆく。
後半、一気にすべてが展開し、最後にすべてが明らかになるが、謎解きの部分はスッキリと腑に落ちる、という感じではなく、読んだあとの爽快感もない。事件が終わったあとに、何が残るのかというと、何も残っていないようにも感じられる。
作者の引き出しの多さがよくわかる。ただ、よくできてはいるけれど、好き嫌いが分かれる作品ではある。

どうしてこう、恩田作品の入りは良くできているんでしょうか。

ごくごく平凡な男が突然失踪して殺されて・・
ぐいぐい人を惹きつける展開でした。
この男が持つ特技についての細かいエピソードなどは
「なるほどね」と思わせてくれるのですが、
やはり後半に行くにつれ、？？の連続で。

殺人事件の話じゃなかったの？
これって、テーマは？
誰を主役にして進めてきたお話だったの？？
と、色々疑問点ばかり膨らみ、消化不良になってしまいました。

いつもこんな感想ばかり持つのに、
何故恩田陸を読んでしまうのか。
ほとほと自分に愛想が尽きた感じです。
