それぞれが抱えている不幸はとても現実的だ。身体障害、がん、過去の恋の傷、歴史に残る大きな事故。詰め込みすぎ、とこのレビューに書かれている人もあるけれど、それぞれが背負っている人生の重みは、私にはリアリティがあった。生きていくというのは、どんどん重荷を背負っていくということだと。ただ、この作品、主要人物は最終的に皆さんが善人である。真からの悪人がいなくて、優しさに包まれるのが、この著者のすごいところでもあり、いささか物足りないところでもある。冒頭はミステリー仕立てにはじまっても、全員が、善い人として終わる。それは、心の底で著者が人間を信じているからなのだろう。許す／許さないというよりも、最終的には「信じようよ」というメッセージが匂い立った。信じようというメッセージが、もしかしたら作品中の観音様に象徴されているのかもしれない。

北海道の炭鉱町で育った、幼なじみ4人組のお話。
4人組とは言え、うち1人は完全な脇役扱いで、あまり語られないわりに、4人が接触する周辺人物のことまで、実にボリュームたっぷりに書き込まれている。
この4人の仲良し時代が突然終わりを告げたらしいのだが、その理由は長く明かされない。
4人のうち3人は東京で再会し、うち2人は特別な関係にあったらしいことを匂わせるのだが、これも長らく明かされない。

以上のことで、非常に下巻まで引っ張られるのだが、それが明らかになっても、あまり衝撃がなかったというのが正直なところ。
作りこみ過ぎというか、引っ張り過ぎというか…。
ただ、主要人物の一人の闘病ものとして、引き込まれてしまったのも事実である。
死を前に自分を、過去を、血縁者を許す…その過程はなかなか説得力あるものであった。

ただ、この物語は内側から「うわ〜っ」と感情が込み上げるような、そういうのを狙って書かれているなという気がすごくするのである。
その作為性が見え見えなせいで、泣けなかったのだろうか。
乗り切れなかった感が、非常に大きい。

「家庭」や「学校」というわりと小さなテリトリーの中でドラマを作り上げることの多い重松氏、本書はちょっと毛色が違うものでした。
「友情」「家族」「過疎」「許し」、それらのことが、盛りだくさんに入っているからです。
4人の友人、彼らを取り巻く人々、みんなを丁寧に描き、うま〜く絡めて行くのですが、なぜか焦点がぼやけた感じがしてなりません。
私的には「その日のまえに」のほうがずっと好きです。
