森村 誠一
昭和8年、埼玉県熊谷市生まれ。熊谷商業高校から青山学院大学文学部英米文学科に進む。青山学院大学卒業後、9年間のホテル勤務を経て、本格的に作家活動を開始。昭和44年、「高層の死角」で江戸川乱歩賞を受賞し、昭和47年には「腐蝕の構造」で日本推理作家協会賞を受賞。さらに平成16年、第7回日本ミステリー文学大賞を受賞する。発表の翌年に映画化され大きな話題を巻き起こした「人間の証明」(昭和51年・角川小説賞受賞)と翌年の「青春の証明」、「野生の証明」の「証明」三部作の刊行により、現代日本を代表する推理小説作家としてその地位を確立した(本データはこの書籍が刊行された当時に掲載されていたものです)

本書は、文章読本としての本書を、著者が意図して執筆したものではない。
そうではなく、作家生活の長い著者が、雑誌などに寄稿した断片を、寄せ集めたものだ。
そのため、それぞれの章における、著者の主張の一貫性や文体そのものに、少々ばらつきを感じる。

ただ、著者は、とてつもないエンターテイナーだ。
我々読者には、それぞれにひいきの作家が、通常は複数存在する。
ところが、多くのひいきの作家は、一定期間で文壇から消えてしまう場合が多い。
その最大の原因は、卑近な言葉を使うと「ネタ切れ」だろう。
著者は、非常に長期間、ネタ切れを起こしていない。

作家生活４０周年を超える著者は、ネタ切れする事無く、我々読者に、膨大な作品を供給し続けてくれた。
その作品の方向性は多岐にわたるが、本書から、作品を供給し続ける事の大変さが、ひしひしと伝わってくる。

タイトルこそ文芸の条件となっているが、作家を続ける必要条件も述べられている。
一方で、著者のこれまでの主要作品の、カタログの様な役割も果たしている。

本書は新たに執筆されたものではないが、作品を供給する側の理屈が興味深い。
本書を読んで、著者の作品をますます、ひいきしたくなった。
