字も割と大きく、面白いというのもあって、気がついたら一気に読み終えていました。何をやっても冴えないパパだけど、博物館を守るために果敢に行動する姿は、息子でなくとも感銘を受けるはずです。外国人の名前などはいろいろ出てくると頭がこんがらがってしまうのですが、この作品はどの名前もスッと入ってきて（皆個性豊かだからかなあ？）、ラリーやニッキーに劣らず親しみを覚えます。基本的にはコメディですが、最後はほんわかした気持ちになれ、読後の満足感を十分に味わうことができました。

　読みやすく、あっという間に読み終えてしまいました。映画を小説化したというだけあり、おもしろくてシンプルなストーリーです。
　
　さえない中年の主人公は何をやってもうまくいかず、愛する息子も離婚した妻と一緒に暮しています。しかし息子にはいいところ見せたいというのが親心。やっと見つけた仕事というのが博物館の夜警でした。
　ですがこの博物館の展示品が夜になると動き出します。恐竜は犬のように遊んでくれとねだり、モアイ像はガムが大好き。ネアンデルタール人は木をこすり合わせて火をおこそうとしています。この勝手きままに動き回る展示品を夜明け前に元の状態にするのが夜警の仕事でした。

　落ちこぼれの父親が冒険し、息子の尊敬と仕事を手にするという簡単な内容です。博物館のめちゃくちゃな状態が最後にはハッピーエンドで落ち着くのでホッとしました。楽しい話ですが映画としての内容がほとんどで、普通の小説のように行間を楽しむ余地はないように思われます。全体的に博物館独特の知的で重々しい雰囲気はなく、どちらかと言うと映画が活字になったという感じです。
