日野原 重明
1911年山口県に生まれる。10歳の時、病気のため運動を控えなければならない日々のなかでピアノに出会う。やがて母親の病気を治してくれた医師の姿を見て、自らも医師の道を目指す。1937年京都帝国大学医学部卒業。1941年聖路加国際病院内科医となり、現在聖路加国際病院名誉院長・同理事長、財団法人ライフ・プランニングセンター理事長、日本音楽療法学会理事長などを務める

村上 康成
1955年岐阜県に生まれる。子どもの頃から絵を描くことと釣りをすることが大好きだった。創作絵本をはじめ、ワイルドライフ・アートなどのグラフィック関連、またエッセイ等、独自の世界を幅広く展開する自然派アーティスト。絵本作品に『ようこそ森へ』(ボローニャ国際児童図書展グラフィック賞受賞)、『ピンク!パール!』(ブラチスラバ世界絵本原画ビエンナーレ金牌受賞)、『なつのいけ』(日本絵本大賞受賞)など多数(本データはこの書籍が刊行された当時に掲載されていたものです)

９５歳で今も現役のお医者さんという人が、小学生に命について話をするというストーリー。その人が考える命とは「時間」なのだそうです。時間であるからには限りがあり、だからこそ有意義に使わなければならない。そして、その時間＝命は自分のためだけでなく、他の人に対して使ってこそ素晴らしいものになる、ということでした。

初めて、読んだときは、ただ、ふーんという感じだったのですが、ゆっくりと考えていくうちに、自分の持つ時間を人のために使うということを考えさせられました。

実は子供が出来る前、もし子供が生まれたら自分の時間が無くなってしまいそうでちょっとこわかった。でも、そうじゃなくて人（自分の子供）のために時間を使うことが、自分では気付かなくても、もしかしたら自分の命を輝かせてくれているのかもしれない。そして、きっと人のために自分の時間を使うって、すごく大変なことなのでしょう。でもだからこそ、人のために使う時間の中にしかない、幸せがあるのかもしれない。それは子育てでも、仕事でも、ボランティアでも同じことだろうと思います。この絵本はそう気付かせてくれました。

子供が少し手が離れて、これから自分の時間をどうやって、人のために使っていくのか、今少し考えたいと思います。

95歳で今なお、医師として活動されている日野原先生が、10歳の小学生にむけて
おこなっている「いのち」の授業を紹介した絵本。

「いのちは、どこにあると思いますか？」

授業の中で先生は子どもたちに問いかけます。むずかしい質問ですね。
なぜなら、命は生きている者みんなが持っていながら、直接見れませんから。
ただ感覚的に、自分自身の体のどこかにあると思うのではないでしょうか。

命の姿は見えないけれでも、表現したり感じたりすることは出来ます。
例えば、先生が黒板にチョークで引いた長い直線。これも命。
先生が貸してくれた聴診器から聞こえてくる心臓の鼓動。これも命。

では、先生の答えが何だったか？　それは本書を読んでみてください。
説明を聞いて、なるほどと思いました。
「いのち」に意味を与え、未来に視点をおいたわけですね。

大人が読んでも、読後にはウワーッと視野がひらけることでしょう。
まあ、95歳生きた先生から見れば、ほとんどの人は子どものようなもの
でしょうから。
