一作目は衝撃だった。前作は駄作というほどいただけなかった。というわけで３作目。なんと前後編ものの前ということでびっくり。とはいっても本作は本作で完結している。この人の本は火山が主人公になると生きてくる気がします。その周りの人間模様は舞台装置の一部のようです。舞台装置として使われる人間描写はおもしろい。しかし人間関係をえがこうとするとあまさが浮き彫りです。でも火山噴火の様子はさすがです。火山と神話の結びつけもさすがです。主人公の変わりものの火山学者は著者の投影体みたい。本作をうけての次回作、果たして作者の持ち味をいかせるか、２番煎じに終わるか。

いつもながらの軽妙な語りながら、火山や国造りにまつわる神話など、まじめな科学からトリビアまで情報満載です。噴火の際の被害地域のいろいろな可能性から、支援にかかる汚い政治と利権の話、マスコミ報道がもたらす錯覚など、小学校で関東平野は関東ローム層の上にできていると習って以来ウン十年、東京まで富士山の溶岩が流れてきたのだと信じ込んでいた単純無知な私でなくても、新たに目を開かれることがたくさん出てくるのは受け合いです。笑えるところが多いからといって、全てがすっと頭の中に入ってくる簡単な本ではありませんが、学者の方の解説にもあるように、一人でも多くの人に読んでもらって、可能性としての情報と仮想体験を共有してほしいと思います。

第３作なのでデビュー作ほどの衝撃は受けないだろうと思いながら、読み始めた。しかし、その予想は良い意味で裏切られた。富士山噴火をメインテーマにパニック小説の体裁をとっている。山体崩壊などについては、富士山噴火のドキュメント番組などで紹介されていることはあるが、多くの人にその恐ろしさを伝えることが、うまくいっているとは思えない。このよう形の方がもっと伝わるであろう。そして、ハリウッド映画並みの特撮を交えた邦画が生まれるともっと良いだろう。
富士山噴火に興味を持っている方は、ぜひ読んで欲しい。
