　「珍妃の井戸」が「蒼穹の昴」の外伝的な作品であったのに対し、今作は正当な続編である。主人公こそ変わったが、明らかにあの後の中国を綴った大作である。私にとって「蒼穹の昴」は今まで読んだ中でダントツのナンバーワン小説である。その正当な続編・・・。出版されると聞いただけでうれしくて泣いてしまった。
　さて内容はなぞの老婆から途方も無い予言を受けた張作霖が馬賊の頭となり、中国統一を目指す話である。この一巻は、大いなるプロローグ、といった感じで本当に話が動き出すのは二巻以降になりそう。ただ、一巻でも十分に物語を堪能できる。相変わらず、出てくるキャラクターはみんな魅力的。これは浅田次郎のうまさなのだが、新キャラクターが登場し、その人物について２〜３ページも読むと読者はすっかりファンになってしまう。とにかく人物描写が巧みで、一つ一つの台詞に血が通っている。今作で新たに登場したキャラはまとめて好きになった。その中で、この巻ではわずかしか登場しなかった西太后と李春雲が光る。旧キャラと新キャラの邂逅を想像するだけで今後から目が離せない。
　あの名作中の名作、「蒼穹の昴」の続編にして浅田次郎渾身の中国歴史小説「中原の虹」。やはり圧倒的である。

　心に染み入る文章・・美しいのです。
私はナレーターをしているのですが、読書をしていて、
思わず声に出して読みたくなる小説って以外に少ない。
　浅田さんの文章は思わず声に出したくなる。
平易だけど、美しく、テンポ感がある。
きっと著者自身が実際に声に出しながら、推敲しているのでは・・
と思えてしまう。
　早く三巻を！

馬賊の首領・・として有名な
張作霖の登場。

馬賊のどのメンバーたちの氏素性も
悲しい過去・・

国家が機能しない社会で、
軍閥や馬賊がそれを補完する・・でも、十分にカバーできるはずもなく。

「蒼穹の昴」以来の愛すべき主人公たち・・

　李春雲（リイチュンユン）の兄の存在・・
　これからの春雲との絡みも楽しみです。
