幼い女の子が犠牲になる性犯罪は、現実の世界でも後を絶たない。犯人を捕まえても、
同じような事件が起こり続ける。もし我が子が犠牲になったとしたら・・・。どうすれば
止められるのか？この作品の「男」の究極の選択は驚愕すべきものだった。だが、ほかに
どんな方法があるのだろう。決して許される方法ではないけれど、犠牲者の家族が、胸が
すっとする思いを味わうのは当然だろう。「恐ろしい殺人犯だけれど、捕まってほしく
ない。」読んでいて、そう思ってしまう。
最後の最後まで犯人は分からない。そのことが、作品を一気に読ませる原動力になって
いる。ラスト・・・真実を知ったとき、そして、「絶対に捕まらない。」というその言葉の
意味するものを知ったときは衝撃だった。はたしてこのラストは是か非か？いろいろな人の
意見を聞いてみたいと思った。

何らかの賞を受賞した後の作品は質が落ちるというのがありがちなパターンで、あえて期待値を下げて読み始めたのだが、今回はよい方に裏切られた。「天使のナイフ」は少年犯罪をテーマにしていたが、今回の「闇の底」は少女を犠牲者とした性犯罪をテーマに選んでいる。犯人を追う側と犯人側の両方の行動と心理を描写するパターンは、最近の推理小説でもボチボチ見られるようになったが、この作品も冒頭から両者を交互に描写している。そして、犯人を「男」と匿名で表記し、いったいこの「男」が誰なのかということを読者に考えさせる。読み出したら止まらない。途中で作者が意図的に作ったと思われる罠もある。読了後に帯にある「絶対に捕まらない−。運命が導いた、哀しすぎる「完全犯罪」。」という文言が初めて理解できた。東野圭吾とどことなくタッチが似ており、彼の推理小説が好きな人にはお薦めである。

乱歩賞を受賞した「天使のナイフ」は、犯人の意外性はもちろん、
少年法の抱える問題など、社会に問題提起する優れた作品と受け止めた。
本作品は、意外性には満ちているが、社会性では前作より劣るように感じる。
性犯罪が社会問題化している事実や、更生の難しさには触れているが、
はたして「闇の底」の結末がふさわしいものなのか？
次回作は、「天使のナイフ」のように、
作者が投げかけるテーマにどう向き合ったら良いのか、
またまた読者をうならせる内容を期待したい
