１１話の短編集。うち、「太陽のみえる場所まで」は新潮文庫から出ている「female」にも収録されている。これは圧倒的なリアリティに満ちているので是非お薦めしたい。
「おもろい夫婦」はごく最近の作品だが、文体の硬質さ・描写の細かさなどが初期に比べて格段に上がっている。そして何より、この話のタイトルを良い意味で裏切られるようなブラックなストーリー。なるほど、こういう夫婦を「おもろい」とすることもできるよな、と、その発想のとんでもなさに感嘆。

そして、何をさしおいてもまず一番に読んでもらいたいのが表題作「ママの神様」だ。
飲み屋を経営し生計を立てるシングルマザーとその息子の話。仕事の時間帯が夜であるために、朝息子のお弁当を作るのも困難な状態。それを怪訝な目で見る人々。しかし、ささやかな言葉やふたりきりの時間に、目には見えなくとも確実に感じるお互いの愛。「みんな誰かの神様なんだ。」この一文にこみあげるものがあるのはなぜだろう。
そして、この一文に救われる人間が大人・子供問わず、どれほどいることだろう。
必死に生きている人間ほど、愛を強く感じることができる。逆に言えば、ぬるま湯の中にいる人間ほど、愛は感じられないということだ。今の世相を表しているように思えてならない。
この一編を、是非国語の教科書に載せてほしい。これは大人だけの読み物ではない。愛に不毛になっている子供たちの胸にも、突き刺さる何かがあるはずだ。

小さな子を子育てしている私には、読んでいて考えさせられる場面が幾つもありました。
そしてせつなくなる反面、子供の時の自分の気持ちを思い出したりしました。
どんな形でも母と子は繋がっているんだな、と痛感させられ、読後子供に対して優しくなれました。
子育てに悩んでいる人が読んでみるといいかもしれません。

とても楽しく読ませていただきました。
室井さん独自のエッセンスが至るところにちりばめられていて・・・。
子育ての奥深さがしみじみと感じられる本でした。
おススメです。
