著者によると、ＤＶＤブック『昭和ニッポン』のブック部分を上・中・下三巻に分けて編集したものである。

開戦から敗戦までの経緯がごく掻い摘んで語られ、昭和戦後史＜上＞が始まる。上巻の対象は昭和16年から33年（1941年〜1958年）、記述は簡潔にして要を得、当時の写真や時勢を表すコラムも豊富で読みやすい。
1942年生まれの小生にとっては高校入学までの戦後史であり、自分史と重ね合わせてみると極めて興味深い。家に初めてテレビがきたのが、多分、皇太子御成婚の昭和34年であろうことが改めて確認できた。

敗戦に伴うＧＨＱの６年余りの占領統治から講和条約締結による独立まで、そして東西冷戦という国際環境下での復興と発展。本書は特定のイデオロギーに捉われることがなく、極めて淡々と語っていく。戦後60年余りが経過し、この時代をみる歴史観の成熟さを強く感じさせる好著である。
