舞台は、現代のベトナム。ＴＶ番組の取材中に、日本人タレントが誘拐される。誘拐した側のベトナムの少数民族のゲリラ組織の指導者やメンバー、ＴＶ番組制作スタッフの日本人達、ベトナム戦争で有名となった元ジャーナリスト、公安の刑事達。それぞれ過去や問題を抱える人々が、身代金受け渡しのジャングルで、交わるとき・・・。次々起こる事件、誘拐の謎、その背景にあるベトナム戦争の歴史と現代までの傷跡。

少数民族の抑圧、アメリカの帝国主義（？？）、ベトナム共産党など、政治的な面も出てきますが、「運命と戦いながら、それに翻弄される人々」の様子、主人公だけでなく、主な登場人物一人一人の苦悩や意思、人生、生き方、それぞれの「運命との戦い」の様子が圧倒的に強く描かれています。純粋に小説として楽しめるものでした。
ストーリの良さのためか、話の上手さのためか、ボリュームがあるわりには、一気に読めました。時間を忘れさせるぐらいに、のめり込める本でした。

船戸与一の作品は全て読んでいるのですが、ちょっと迫力に欠けていますね。
小生としては南米３部作辺りの、日本人が絶対に書けないようなスケールの物語を忘れられません。
今回もベトナムをテーマに、隠れた歴史を紐解いている中でのフィクションなのですが、う〜ん、どうでしょう。
ここ最近は、過去の作品を再読しているような状況です。
日本の作家の中では、落合信彦、柘植久慶と並んで（やはり好きな作者は決まってしまいますね）好きな作家ですので、毎度大変大きな期待しているのですよ。

はっきり言って疲れた本。船戸さん物は結構サクサク読めたのに…(>_<)
歴史に対するこだわり感、船戸さんの自己満足かな？
自分としては、過去の問題なのか、現実の腐敗問題なのかわからなかった。
拉致もいらないし、妻殺しも意味がない、かなって。
