　著者は、エジソン発明収集で著名な弁護士である。
　非常にエジソンを尊敬しているということで、その情熱が
この本からほとばしってくるように感じる。

　この本の画期的なところは、
エジソンの能力の秘密を彼の母の子育てから読み解くところである。
　たとえば、誰しも、エジソンのエピソードの、
１＋１がわからなかったこと、小学校のころ落ちこぼれであった
ということを聞いたことがある人がいると思うが、
そのあたりのエピソードが詳しく述べられている。
　好奇心が旺盛ゆえに、小学校を落ちこぼれたエジソンを
母親は励まし、ホームスクール形式で、好奇心のおもむくまま、
物事を調べ、チャレンジし、失敗することを教えた。
　このことが、後の電球の発明について、1万回もの失敗を繰り返した時、
失敗したのではない、1万回うまくゆかない方法を見つけたのだと
いったエジソンの言葉につながる。

　このような感じで、エジソンがなぜ天才といわれるまでの
すばらしい業績を残せたのかを、
彼に影響を与えた母を中心に読み解いていく本である。

チャンスは衣をかぶってやってくる。
だから見逃してしまうのだ。

幸運は、機会と準備が一致したときに実現する。

頭は筋肉と同様、鍛えるほど強化される。

いつでも必ず、もっとよいやり方がある。
それを探せ。

素敵なことを知っていたのである。

エジソンは誰もが知っている天才。
なのに「電気を発明した人」くらいの知識しかない人が、ほとんどではないでしょうか。

この本は、エジソンの大ファンである著者が、何千点もの発明品のコレクション、資料に基づいて調べ上げた知られざるエピソードが満載。

蓄音機を発明した当時、エジソンは耳がほとんど聞こえなかったなんて、知ってましたか?

音が聞きたくて仕方がなかったエジソンが、ピアノに噛み付いて、その振動で音をかすかに聞いていた時に、「音は振動だ!」と発見。

レコード盤の小さな溝につけられた凸凹を、針がその微細な振動を捕らえてホーンによって音が拡大される蓄音機の原型が、それで出来たんだそうです。

そのエジソンが、ガジガジかじった歯型のついたピアノは、今でもエジソンの自宅に大切に保管されているそうです。

そんなエピソードが、始めから終わりまで目一杯披露されています。

天才エジソンが、どういう環境の中で形作られていくのか、興味深く最後まで一気に読んでしまいました。
