他のレビュアーの方も書かれている通り、この小説の情景描写の濃度の高さ、緻密さは圧倒的です。読んでいる間はそれをこなすのに精一杯ですが、読み終わるときにはストンと腑に落ち、カタルシスを味わえるでしょう。

この情報密度の高さは、ひとつに、上演済みの舞台作品を小説化したことに関係があるように思います。作者は、舞台の観客が劇場で体験したイメージのすべてを、小説の読者が共有できるように望んでいるのではないでしょうか。

現実の舞台には、戯曲だけでは表し切れない細かな演技に加え、舞台装置や照明や音響といったさまざまな効果が含まれます。舞台の上の俳優が入れ替わるのを追うように、主観が入れ替わり、スポットライトが当たるように、描写がクローズアップされます。その一方で、箱庭を見下ろすような俯瞰的な視点も感じられます。とにかく演劇的です。

このように情報が凝縮された文章を、通常の小説と同じ感覚で読んでいくと、ページをめくってもなかなか時間が経過せず、もどかしく感じる方もいるかもしれません。

そこで、ウォーミングアップとして、作者の処女小説集である『江利子と絶対』を先に読まれることをお薦めします。たぶん、体感速度と小説の中の時間の経過にずれがなく、これが本谷さんの小説の基準になると思われます。その上で『腑抜けども、悲しみの愛を見せろ』を読めば、「あ、ここは演出だな」とぐいぐい読み進めること請け合いです。

読み終わり本を閉じるときには、劇場を出た観客が感じるのとよく似た満足感をきっと味わえると思います。

劇作家としての本谷の世界観が全面に出ており、登場人物一人・一人の個性が強く、話の終わり方も個人的には好きな終わり方でした。
欠点としては情景描写が細かすぎるため嫌になってましまうかもしれません。
しかし、これからの本谷作品を語る上で欠かせない作品となると思うので読んでおいて損はないと思います。

本谷有希子は、作家としてはまだ日が浅いのでこれからの本谷作品に期待しましょう！！

結構読みやすい。超自意識過剰な姉、残酷なまでな観察者の妹、それら姉妹の問題を抱え込みすぎる兄、そしておかしいほどお人よしなその妻で構成されるお話。作者の主催する劇団で上演されていた物語らしいけれど、オチがキッチリあることや時系列で区切られた展開の仕方などから、なるほどと頷ける。妹の残酷さ、姉の自信過剰さ等の特徴が逆にステレオタイプな印象を受けたのが残念なところ。ただ重くなりすぎずサクサクと読めて、アッというオチもあり、おもしろいことはおもしろかった。
