「お父さんはお父さんをやめることにした」
家族３人の揃った朝食の席での唐突な父の発言から、この物語は始まる。
　それは、少々ユーモラスであり、コミカルなファミリーストーリーの始まりを予感させるものであった。

　けれど、物語は読者の予想を裏切り、坦々と家族の心の闇を描き出していく、瀬尾さん独特の瑞々しい表現で…
教師を辞め薬学部を目指す父、
幼い頃より何をやらせてもトップクラスで、天才の名を欲しいままにしながら、大学進学を辞めオーガニックな農場で働く兄、
ある事件をきっかけに家を出てひとりアパート暮らしをしている母、
そして、家族の中では比較的に平凡に見える妹の目からストーリーは語られていく。
おのおのが家族の中で役割を果たしつつ、歯車となってバランスを保っている平和な日常が、
ひとつの歯車の摩耗から、少しずつそれぞれに影響を及ぼしていく。
　重いテーマを描きつつ、読後感は爽やかでこれはまさに瀬尾まいこ氏独特の世界だ。
後半のエピソードは胸が詰まり涙があふれた。　１０代の頃のように泣ける感性を呼び起こしてくれる一冊だった。

久しぶりにいい本に巡り会えました。
ここの評価をみるとイマイチなのかな?って思ってたんですが、いざ読みだすと止まらなくなりました。

読み終わると、なにか伝ってくるものがあります。
是非、読んでみて下さい。

親による子殺し、子供による親殺しといった痛ましい事件が
こう毎日のようにマスコミを騒がせるようになると、
一体、家族ってなんだ？と、
到底答えの見出せない思考のスパイラルにはまり込んでしまいそうになる。
多分、いつからか、多くの家族が壊れて始めているのだろう。
でも、じゃあ、普通のお父さん、普通のお母さん、普通の子供って？

そんな漫然たる疑問を日常的に抱える私たち現代人が
何の気なしに、この小説を手にすれば、
複雑なスパイラルから知らず知らずにふっと抜け出て、
「なぁ〜んだ、いいっか、このまんまで。」と
肩の力がすとーんと抜ける、そんな感動的な1作だと言えよう。

子供にも、そして、大人にも読んでもらいたい。
すると、読んだ人たちが、家族問題の袋小路に、
優しい風穴を少しずつ開けてくれるのではないだろうか。
小説が社会を救う、おそらくこの可能性を信じるのは私だけではないはず。
この作品を読んで、共に「幸せな社会」を少しずつ取り戻していきませんか？
