今やその意味さえもが薄れてきてしまっているそれらの問いに対して、世界の中心で愛をさけぶを皮肉る形で、あるいは東浩紀の評論に応える形で、あるいは自身の小説に言及する形で、舞城王太郎なりの回答を示している。
どれかにでも興味がある人は読んでみてください。

スピードとパワーの溢れた独自の文体で突っ走っている恋愛小説です！！中篇で読みやすく、主人公である小説家の、小説内小説も面白い！著者の一文一語一句の表現をぜひ堪能してもらいたいです。巷に溢れたよくある恋愛小説に飽きている人も飽きていない人も、恋愛小説が好きな人もそうでない人も、もうほんと読んでみてください

突然変異種のような扱いをされることが多いような気がする舞城王太郎ですが、まっとうに文学の本流を受け継いでいるように思います。言葉遣いの面白さは確かに個性的ですが、考えてみれば優れた作家の言葉遣いというのは皆個性的なものです。
いくつかのエピソードを並列させるこの作品の手法は、それぞれの繋がりが希薄な感はありますが、別に密接に関わっている方が良い、という理由もないわけで、非常に面白い試み。特に、神との戦いという荘厳なテーマを、ライトノヴェル的な道具立てで表現した、ＳＦ仕立ての章は、それだけで短編として成立し得るほどの密度を持っています。
ただ『世界の中心で~』のパロディと言われるこの作品、「愛」をテーマにしているのか、それとも「愛」を口実に、何か他のものを描こうとしているのかが分からず、どこかはぐらかされているような印象があったのも事実。しかし、村上春樹や高橋源一郎の跡を継ぎ得る、日本文学の大きな可能性であることは間違いない。
余分なことですが、この作品を受賞作に選べなかった芥川賞はその価値を一段下げたと思います。
