帚木さんの作品、大好きで新刊が出るたび必ず読んでます。この最新作は南ア共和国（多分）を舞台に、エイズ渦に苦しむ貧しい人々と日本人医師のふれあいを描いたもの。自身が医師であるだけに医学的バックグラウンドの記述はさすがで、ストーリーも面白いのですが、いちファンとして言わせていただくなら帚木作品としては「そこそこに」面白いというレベルです。高価な薬品を購入するお金のない貧しい患者の「治療」を装い、未認可薬品を投与、治験＝人体実験を繰り返す欧州製薬会社。新薬の副作用を目の当たりにした日本人医師が製薬会社の不正を暴く・・・というプロットかと思いきや、物語は意外な展開に。帚木作品ならではの感動がそろそろクルそろそろクル、と期待しつつ読んでいくといつのまにか＆あっけなく終わってしまいました。読み返しても涙が出た「閉鎖病棟」「三たびの海峡」「ヒトラーの防具」。自分が逃避行をしているような錯覚に陥るほど見事な筆致の「逃亡」。これら作品に比べてしまうと、本作品もふくめ「国銅」「空山」など最近上梓された作品群は凡庸な印象を受けます。

恐ろしい現実がそこにはあった。毎日増え続けるＨＩＶ感染者。予防も治療も追いつかない。感染者は「感染した」という事実を、なかばあきらめの境地で受け入れる。そんなアフリカを製薬会社は、新薬の実験地域のように扱おうとする。悲劇が悲劇を生んでいく。悲劇の連鎖だ。こんな状況で、はたして未来は開けるのか？エイズ問題は私たちにとっても、もはや対岸の火事ではすまされない。火の粉が頭の上にぱらぱらと降り注ぎ始めている。アフリカ・・・。長年虐げられてきた大陸。「アフリカは世界を見つめる瞳だ。」という言葉がとても印象的だった。一日も早くこの世界からエイズの悲劇がなくなるようにと、願わずにはいられない。

「アフリカの蹄」から経た歳月が彼らをすてきな大人にしていました。
正義を貫くことが第一で､そのためには母性をも捨てる覚悟のできているパメラの潔さや毅さと、彼女を支える作田医師の愛情には心を打たれました。
深刻な問題を扱っているにもかかわらず、美しい情景や人々の描写には愛情がこめられていて、一気に読みました。
