「麦の海に沈む果実」の主人公、水野理瀬のその後を描くミステリー。舞台は北海道の不思議な学園から長崎県の洋館へと移り、中学生だった水野理瀬も美しく賢い高校生に成長しています。
今は亡き、理瀬の祖母が彼女に残した古い洋館。地元の人間からは「魔女の館」と呼ばれるこの屋敷に隠された、ある秘密を巡って、理瀬とその血縁者達の様々な思惑がぶつかり合います。
裏世界への道を歩むことになる自分の宿命を受け入れつつも、普通の暮らしに憧れる少女の気持ちを完全には捨てきれていない、理瀬の心理描写がなんとも切なく、儚い。
前作以上にラノベワールドの住人となりつつある理瀬の物語ですが、私は今後の物語にも期待しています。

「麦の海に沈む果実」はもちろんのことですが、恩田陸の短編集「図書室の海」に収録されている「睡蓮」も事前に読んでおいた方が、本作をより楽しめるでしょう。本作のメインパーソンである理瀬、彼女の従兄弟である稔、亘、との幼少期の邂逅を描いたこの短編には、本作に繋がる重要な伏線が隠されています。

『麦の海に沈む果実』の主人公である理瀬を中心に話は展開していきます。

ある洋館をめぐり、それぞれの思惑が渦巻いていきます。
それぞれが疑心暗鬼の中、互いの言葉の端々に敏感にならざるを得ません。
百合というモチーフが濃厚な雰囲気を盛り上げていると思います。

繰り広げられる登場人物の会話によって、
読み手は各登場人物に疑いのまなざしをむけることになるのではないかと思います。
私は恩田氏得意の手法である、この登場人物たちのシャープな会話、
ある意味、辛辣とも言える言葉のやりとりが好きです。

『麦の海に沈む果実』、
『図書室の海』（幼い頃の理瀬に関する短編収録）、
『殺人鬼の放課後』（ヨハンに間する短編収録）を読んでから、
この本を読むことをお勧めします。

この本は読み手へ次回作への期待を抱かせつつ幕を引きます。
おそらく、私は次回作が出れば
急いで書店に足を向けることになるのではないかと思います。

　祖母の奇妙な遺言のため、古い屋敷に住むことになった、高校生水野理瀬。屋敷に住む控えめな姉と奔放な妹の美しい姉妹。祖母の法要のため屋敷に訪れる理瀬の従兄弟達。理瀬を取り巻く登場人物達は最初からいわくありげで疑心暗鬼に駆られます。

　一癖ありそうな大人達と、少年らしい儚さと理瀬に対する憧れと持つ、理瀬の友人の弟。理瀬と友人の朋子に好意を持つ同級生の少年２人。失踪する少年と殺人か事故かわからない事件が続く中、遺言の秘密が模索されていくが・・。少女の仮面を徐々に外して、大人の女性の妖しさと怖さを見せていく理瀬。つかの間同級生の雅紀と自転車で２人乗りして呟く言葉が、無くしていく思い出のように寂しく響く。
　少年少女の瑞々しい感性の描写はいつもながらきゅんとさせられます。同時に大人になっていってしまう理瀬に喪失感と寂しさを感じました。ラストがあっけない気もしますが、誰が犯人かより、そこへ行き着く展開が楽しめます。

　恩田ファンにはお馴染みの北見隆氏の挿絵も相変わらず素敵です。いつものように屋敷の中にもお楽しみの謎があります。
