両親が離婚したため、母親とMiguelとJuanitaの兄弟はVermont へ引っ越してきました。
Miguelはこれまで住んでいたNew Yorkとは違う環境で、父親の居ない寂しさを噛み締め
ながら暮らしています。そんなある日、母親のふるさとドミニカからTia Lolaがやって
きます。真冬のVermontに飛び切りの笑顔で登場したTia Lolaが、淋しいMiguelの心を
暖めていきます。

Tia Lola（Aunt Lola）は、スペイン語しか話せないため文中にたくさんスペイン語が
出てきます。スペイン語部分は斜字体になっていて必ずその後に意味が説明してありますが、
読みにくいと感じる方がいらっしゃると思います。それが気にならなければ英文自体は
易しいです。

両親が離婚して、Miguelは、お母さんと妹と共にバーモントに引っ越して来ました。
ニューヨークと違って、黒い髪も浅黒い肌も珍しいこの町で、Miguelはなかなか友だちをつくれません。
ペンキのはげかけた田舎の古い家で、涙もろくなったお母さんとの寂しい生活の中、
働いているお母さんの変わりにMiguelたちの面倒を見るために、お母さんの故郷ドミニカからやってきたのが、Lolaおばさんでした。
雪の積もる寒い冬の町に、南国の花や椰子やオウムの鮮やかな色、暖かな国の陽気さをそのまま持ってきたLolaおばさん。
スペイン語しか離せないおばさんは、それでも、あっという間に町中に友だちをつくっていきます。

アメリカの田舎で、どうどうとドミニカ仕様のLolaおばさん。その、変わらなさが素敵だ。
