大切な人をなくしたときに、悲しみをいやしてくれるのは、この詩かもしれない。悲しみの中で読みつがれてきた、一篇の詩があった。

9.11米国、同時多発テロで、父親を亡くした11歳の少女が、一周忌に朗読した。
IRA（アイルランド共和軍）のテロで命を落とした24歳の青年が、“私が死んだときに開封してください”と両親に託した手紙の中に、この詩が入っていた。
女優マリリン・モンローの二十五回忌に朗読された。

朝日新聞『天声人語』が紹介し、大反響となった“死と再生の詩”作者不明の英語詩を、作家・新井満が日本語詩に。

あの雨の夜、冷たくなっていく君の手を只握りしめてやる事しか出来なかった僕は、この本を手にして心が悲しみで震えました。
ほんの一瞬の出来事でした。君はまるでガードレールに凭れてでもいるかの様に座り込んで居ました。何が起きたのかさえ･･･解らなかった！
君と初めて手を繋いだ日の事が、今も昨日の事の様によみがえります。

君と手を繋いだ僕の心臓は緊張と感激で、まるで早鐘の様でした。
でも、その君は･･･もう居ない！
君が居ない悲しみと寂しさに耐えられなかった僕は、君の傍に行こうと･･･
手首に刃物を突き立てていました･･･少しも怖くは有りませんでした。
でも神様は許してくれませんでした。なんて残酷な仕打ちだと恨みました。

僕は君と出会った街を去る事で君を忘れようとしました。
でも気が付くと夜空の星を見ては涙し、雨に肩を打たれては涙し、降りしきる雪を見ては涙し、今も忘れる事が出来ずに居ます。
そんな僕の心を癒してくれた一冊の本･･･千の風になって！
読んでいて何度も涙で文字が滲みました。

これからは風に雨に雪に君を感じ･･･命尽きるまで君の分も生きようと思いました。
本当に素晴らしい本に出会えて･･･良かった！

今年4月若くして最愛の妻を病気で亡くし悲しさと寂しさで
毎日涙していた時妻の友人よりこの本を頂きました。
読み終えた後涙が止まりませんでした。頼りない私についてきてくれた
妻、そしてつらい闘病生活を送りながらも私がいてくれて本当に
良かったと言ってくれた妻。私は妻に何をしてやれただろうと
後悔ばかりが募る中この本を読み、今でも自分は一人ではないんだ、
いつでも私のそばにいて見守ってくれているんだと思うと涙が
止まりませんでした。是非皆様に読んで頂きたい本です。

新聞を読んでいてこの本が紹介されていたので、気になって購入しました。

とても素晴らしい詩です。そして写真も素晴らしいです。　大切な人をなくしてしまった人に、どんな言葉かけたらいいのか分からない時、この本を贈るのも良いかもしれません。　ちょっと残念だったかな？と思ったのが、この詩を書いた、作者不明の人物を著者が追究し過ぎてしまっている所と、どんな背景で書かれたかということを、想像で自分のストーリーにしてしまっている所が、残念でした。　　せっかくの素晴らしい詩が、最後の想像のストーリーで、少し詩の深みと言うか重み？が軽減してしまったように思えました。
