磯谷は大島とｷﾉｺでﾄﾘｯﾌﾟしたことが学校にばれ、自宅謹慎を言い渡された帰宅途中に1人の美しい年上の女性に惹かれる。停学3日目の日、彼は大島とその彼女中子と喫茶店で会い、偶然その女性を見かける。彼女は小林由希子といい36才独身で、英会話教室の校長をしていた。

激流の川に分断された町を舞台に、由希子をめぐる高校生磯谷、大島、中子の物語。確かに日本であるがどこか外国を連想してしまう不思議な舞台設定、ひょうひょうとした文体で綴る青春記、登場人物が全員彼らなりに真剣なのが好感もてた

激流によって、左岸と右岸に分断される街を舞台に、繰り広げられる人間模様。語り部は「私」。「お母さん」の娘だ。

「お母さん」こと、小林由希子は、36歳の独身女性。「女の幸せは結婚」との考えを四方八方から押し付けられることに、うんざりしている。
かといって、真っ向から向かっていくほどの覇気があるわけでもない。できることなら、人生のほとんどを眠ってすごすヤマネになりたいと思っているぐらいである。

そんな彼女に一目ぼれした、男子高校生が二人。
そのうちの一人の彼女も巻き込んで、いくつもの恋が錯綜する。

あらすじはこんな感じだが、感想をのべるなら、作者の様々な思惑は、ことごとく中途半端か、失敗で終わっている気がする。少なくとも、私には。

「激流に分断された街」という舞台設定は、著者にとって大切なもののようだが、この作品に関しては、必然性が感じられない。重松清の「疾走」の舞台となった、リゾート開発によって住人が四散していく街は、必然性もリアリティも、痛いほどあったのだけど。

登場人物も、今ひとつ捉えどころのない奴ばかり。感情移入が出来ないから、彼らの行動も支離滅裂な気がするんだなぁ・・・。

まあ、また読みたいとは思わない作家でした。

　著者の名著「濁った激流にかかる橋」のまちを舞台に繰り広げられる悲喜劇だ。前作ほどの勢いはないが、やはり読ませる。これから読む人は、前記の作品から入るべし。気にいったらこっちを読んでね。「濁った激流」は市町村行政をあざ笑う爽快さがあるが、これはとても地味だから。
　確かに読む人を選ぶ作家で、作品にも面白いものとそうでないものがある。「さして重要でない一日」は面白く読んだが、「ジャンナ」は退屈だった。別に一人の作家の作品、全部を好きでなくても構わないのではないか、と思った最初の作家だ。
