藤田自身の生涯を人間関係（ピカソ、モディリアーニ等有名な画家も多い）、時代背景もかなり忠実に表現することで目の前にその時代が現れたかのようで、ぐいぐい引き込まれてしまった。特にタブーで表現しづらい戦争画を描いた時期の記述に対してもページを割いていたところも好印象である。藤田を知っていてもいなくても、ひとつの歴史ものとしても面白いと思う。今後、戦争画の公開を切に望む。

乳白色の肌でフランスで大成功を収めたフジタだが日本では美術界からの嫉妬と反発に会い、受け入れられない。
最後にはフランスに帰化し、洗礼まで受けるフジタの内面にまで迫る意欲作。
祖国日本とフランスの間で悩み苦しみ、最後まで言い訳をしないフジタに涙します。

従来の藤田観に比べれば、生身の藤田に肉薄していると思う。
ただし、著者の拠って立つスタンスは不明瞭に感じる。
夫人の記憶や意見を、著者自身の藤田観にどう位置付けるのか、
戦争画をどう位置付けるのか、そういった点で、著者の意思は感じられない。

国立近代美術館の「アッツ島玉砕」という作品をみると、

藤田の戦争画は、とても本書に書かれている程度の位置付けとは思えない、
藤田の心の深淵に踏み込む最重要テーマだと思うのだが、
その疑問はいまだ解消されていない。
