御手洗シリーズの中編2編、『鈴蘭事件』と『Pの密室』を収録。『鈴蘭・・』は御手洗が幼稚園児、『P・・』が小学校二年生という物語で、御手洗の秘められた生い立ちと早熟な才能が知れてファンにはたまらない逸品となっている。

ここでの御手洗少年はもうまるで名探偵コナンみたいである。既に事件全体の全体像と自分が正解を明かすことによる影響まで全てを認識している。御手洗のこの優しさは作者自身の優しさに等しい。ファンの気持ちを大切にする島田氏の優しさがでた傑作だ。

御手洗氏の知られざる生い立ちに迫る中編２作からなる作品の文庫版です。
情報のスピードを求めた方は既に単行本等でご存知の事と思いますが、基本的に文庫版のみで追っている私には目新しい内容でした。

彼の性格形成をなさせた一因が多少見え隠れするのはファンにとってはご愛敬ですね。ミステリーとしてのトリック云々については探偵の年齢を考えると、その事件背景と共にこの辺りが妥当だと思いますよ。（それでも充分凄いと思いますが・・・あんまり奇想過ぎるのもかえって引いてしまうかも）それよりも何故彼が事件の解決に関わっていくのか、そのスタンスの原点になってゆく部分へ思いを巡らす事が、その源流からの流れという活躍を知る上では興味深いと思いました。
真実を知り、それを知らしめる事によって生じる残酷さと葛藤する幼き魂、軽く流してしまうには純粋すぎたが故、今の彼を造り上げる遠因となった物語とすれば、私には静かな感動をもたらしてくれた一冊でした。

トリック自体はあまり評判が芳しくないようですが、御手洗潔の裏話的な物語で、これはこれで十分楽しめました。彼は大人になっても、弱い人間に対しては非常に丁寧に接したりしますが、この姿勢は幼稚園児だった頃から変わらないんだなあ、とか、事件を解決しても、それがもたらす影響を考え、決して有頂天にはならないほんとうの優しさを持っているとか。なんだか、たまに、御手洗潔というひと実在の人物であると錯覚すらします。頭が賢いってことは、普通の人にはわからないことまでわかってしまったりして、決していいことばかりではないんですね。
