　ミス・チャンやトムなど、史実とかけ離れた登場人物のため、蒼穹の昴を一読していないと理解や感情の移入に困難をきたすこと必定。本編は、ミステリーと歴史ものの混成で、四人の貴族のインタビュアーや各登場人物の視点で書かれる。蒼穹とは違い、憂国の美妃珍妃の描写には驚かせられた。少々リアリティからの乖離が激しいと思われるが、本編（蒼穹〜）の補足書として、後日談を交えながら愉快に通読出来る作品である。娯楽小説として楽しむには自信をもって推挙できる。

登場人物は同じでも、蒼穹の昴の続編かと思うとそうではなく、舞台を借りた“歴史ミステリー”なのだと読み進めていくと、謎は謎のまま？・・・、直球勝負の蒼穹の昴とは手法は違えども、時代が、人間が描かれていて、納得です。

最初は誰が珍妃を殺したかの謎解きで読み進めていたのですが、結末に至ってはもう涙が止まりませんでした。珍妃の皇帝に対する想い、皇帝の血を吐くような珍妃への想い、戦争への憎悪、いろんな想いが胸に刺さってどうしようもなく悲しくて、今思い返してみても泣きそうになります。ひとがひとをここまで愛することが出来る、それはなんて尊いことなんだと思い知らされた一冊です。
