作者のブレークのきっかけとなった代表作。
パート仲間の殺した夫をバラバラにした4人を描くクライムノベル。

それぞれが様々な家庭事情をかかえており、その「閉塞感」からの「OUT」を描ききったのが本作品であり、ミステリーという枠組みを超えた傑作である。
特に、終盤の息もつかせぬ展開は、これまでに類を見ないものであり、作者にしか描けないすばらしいものである。

次々に展開されるストーリーに引き込まれて一気に読めます。
３人称の叙述がそれぞれの登場人物の視点から交互に展開されるのは、数人の手記の形をとる「グロテスク」に繋がるものがあります。
人物の造形、描写、プロットの構成、全てが素晴らしく、物語の世界に読者を引き込んで放しません。話が進むにつれて次第に主人公の心の奥底の世界が深く展開され心理小説の様相を呈してきます。あくまでも心の深部にフォーカスしていく進行は素晴らしいです。ただそのぶんラストの話の展開のリアリティーが弱くなっているのが残念でした。

自分の不幸を隠している人には、この本は毒だ。家庭の崩壊や、ストレス、閉塞感で、飲酒や買い物や、セックスで自分を傷つけ、何とか均衡を保っている人には、この本はキツイ。読後、自分が隠蔽していたことが全てさらけ出されたような敗北感にとらわれ、悪影響があると思う。幸せな人には、この本の持つ毒は及ばないだろうから、不幸と幸せを試すリトマス試験紙のような本かも。
