物語の基軸は一人の宦官とその義兄弟の官僚の話であるが、晩清をめぐる様々なエピソードがアメリカンキルトのように時空を超えてちりばめられ最後には一枚の織物として完成される構成力には「まいった」という気持ちにさせられる。末期の清は列強に蚕食された挙句、最後は共産主義などに乗っ取られるという悲惨な歴史を辿ったが、国家の末期とは逆に浅田さんの描く登場人物達はそれぞれに生き生きしており魅力的な生き様を見せてくれる。ところで我々日本人は満州人と漢人の関係など殆ど知らないでいるが、この本を通してその確執にある程度触れることができる点でも貴重であった。12~13世紀にユーラシア大陸を制覇した蒙古の血脈は以後の世界史にも度々登場するが、これほどの近年まで影響しているのだということを再認識させられた。

すごいとしか言いようがない。
よくこんな話かけるなぁ。
映画になったってこれより面白いはずはないんだけど、浅田氏にお金が入って浅田氏が喜んでくれるなら映画化してもいいと思う。
原作の６割くらいでも世の中的には最高傑作になるからね。
いっぱい人物が出てきて、それぞれのセリフに泣かされたので何度号泣した事か。

本当に、おすすめ。読んでない人は人生ひとつ損してる。

発売されてすぐに買って以来、何度か読み返しましたが未だこれより面白い歴史小説には出会っていません。わたくしもひねくれ度には自信がある？のですが粗の探しようがない完璧なプロットにいつも参りました、となり、また何かこう元気が出てくる読後感をいつも味わいます。いつまでも手元においておきたい１冊、というか２冊。

ただし、勢いにのって続編の「珍妃の井戸」を買う必要はなし。著者がどういう意図で書いたか知りませんが、こちらの方は大変失礼ながら「蛇足」以外の何ものでもありません。
