１８才になろうとしている孤児のケイのもとに送られてきた差出人不明の小包--その中にはヨーロッパ各地、特にアイルランドのメガリス（古代の巨大石碑）についての伝説や昔話を集めた数冊の本があった。ケイは、その本に導かれるようにアイルランドを訪れ、山の中で巨石のアーチを見つける。それをくぐったとたん、古代のアイルランドの世界へ送りこまれたケイは、記憶をなくしたダナーン族の少女アエーンと出会い、彼女と一緒にダナーン族の４つの宝を探す冒険へと巻きこまれていく・・・。アイルランドの伝説に興味がある方には、おすすめですが、それだけではなく、自分が誰であるか知らないケイと自分が誰なのか忘れてしまったアエーンの成長をえがく物語としても上質のファンタジーです。同じ著者の「妖精王の月」も楽しく読ませてもらいましたが、話のスケールとしては「歌う石」のほうがさらに大きく、完成度は高いように思います。児童書の扱いですが、話の内容や主人公たちの年齢から言うと、中高生以上向きでしょう。ファンタジーが好きな大人も十分に楽しめます。

5.0 out of 5 stars ケルト神話を下敷きに少女の成長を描くファンタジー, 2002/3/7
アイルランドの古写本「侵略の書」を元に、二人の少女の遍歴と成長を描いた作品です。まるでケルト模様のように螺旋を描くストーリーは読み終わった後に登場人物と一緒に旅をしたかのような思いを起こさせます。
まとまりの付かない神話を筋の通ったエンターテイメント小説として書き上げたメリングのケルトへの愛情が溢れる一冊です。
フィンタンの言葉で語られる魔法使いマーリンの人とふるまいもツボを押さえていて、好きな人にはたまらない本だと思います。アイルランドやケルトに興味のある方には「ドルイドの歌」とともにお勧めの１冊。

魂の故郷を求めてアイルランドへ出かけたヒロインは、伝説の古代へ足を踏み入れてしまう。そこで、記憶を失った少女と出会い、失われた宝を４つ揃える冒険の旅を始める。

神話を下敷きにした壮麗な物語です。そして運命の恋。女の子が冒険の旅をするファンタジーってなかなかないのでおもしろく読めました。児童書ですが、中学生以上向けかな。
