今２回目を読んでいます。最初から最後まで伏線だらけ。あらゆる出来事が複雑に絡み合ってラストに向かっていき、読みはじめたら終わりまで一直線の壮大な近代中国を舞台にした大河ドラマです。世間では悪者として見られることが多い西太后を別の視点から描いているのも面白いな、と思います。瞠目すべきは清末の微細な描写です。あらゆる場面が目に浮かぶ程の描写力。思わず僕は映画「ラストエンペラー」を借りに走りました。清という国の成立から繁栄、衰亡にいたる過程が面白い程よくわかります。何度もジーンときてしまう心に残る小説です。アジア的絶対君主主義から共産主義中国への移行、つまり毛沢東登場のシーンでは思わず、さすが、と思ってしまいました。是非映画化して実写でみたいと思っていま!す。

全面的に否定するわけでもないのですが、浅田次郎は少々巧すぎます。そして、その巧さゆえに、浅田次郎の書物から手を引いている方も少なからずいらっしゃるのではないかとも思います。ですが、それはこの作品を前にした時、正直、「愚」の選択だと思います。この作品は違います。巧さを超えています。乱暴に言い切ってしまえば、浅田次郎を超えています。浅田次郎が物語を支配しているのではなく、この物語が浅田次郎を突き動かしているような感じさえしてくるのです。中国の宦官、科挙制度のリアルな描写、西大后に対する新しく魅力的な解釈、･･･　惹きこまれます。そして、惹きこまれたまま、この清朝末期の怒涛の時代の波に翻弄されつくされてしまいます。･･･　間違いなく、物語の力に呑まれ、ただただ、夢中に読まされてしまうという本読みの悦楽を十二分に味あわせてもらうことのできる作品です。

貧しい境遇から自分を信じて身を立てていく春児のひたむきでいたいけな姿が目に浮かぶようです。頑張って、気を張って生きぬいていく登場人物達が、人生の不条理に慟哭するシーンに差し掛かると、もう電車の中でも涙無しには読めません。いつもの浅田次郎節、と思っても抵抗することはできないんですよね。
