　　私が小学生の頃に爆発的に売れたこの本を母はハードカバーで買ってきた。真っ赤と真緑のカバーに金色の帯。それを観た私に母はいった。『いつかあなたにこの本を呼んでもらいたいから、ここに置いておくね。』

　　高校１年の時に思い出したように呼んだ『ノルウェイの森』はまだ私には理解できない複雑なストーリーと、心に大きな穴を作る結末で、なんとも言えない後味を味わった。それから３年。直子が通っていただろうと思われる武蔵野の英語教育で有名な女子大でこの本を読みなおした時、涙がとまらなくなった。

　　すべての人が孤独を背負って生きている。曖昧で掴みようのない孤独の中でもがき苦しむ直子と、同じ孤独でもビビッドに端的に孤独を映す緑。その狭間で同じように孤独を生きたとお!!るが曖昧なものから、少しでも形あるのもに惹かれていくという都会の中の孤独。人々の行き交う交差点でさえも孤独を隠しきれない大学生達の孤独は、当時も今もかわっていない。
　　それでも記憶は確実に薄れていく。何度読みなおしても新しい発見があるのはそのためだろう。死は確実に生の一部であり、直子は自分の生を確実に人の心に植え付けるすべを知っていたように思う。それは直子自身が恋人から学んだものであり、とおるに与えたものであったと思う。

　　人間の無力さ、はかなさ、その中で冴える強さ、あたたかさ。人間の人間らしい姿をありのままに書いた作品。
自分が今どこにるのかわかりますか？

　たぶん説明しなくてもわかるほど、有名な本。
一度高校生のときに最初の１ページだけ読んでやめてしまった。
なんとなくやめてしまった。
それから１０年以上経って、今の自分ならわかるのかもしれない。
そんな気がして読んだ。わからなかった。
登場人物のだれにも感情移入できなかった。
自分の中にこの本に書かれている世界はないのだろう。

文章はすごくきれい。でも理解できない。それだけ。

村上春樹はノーベル賞候補だったらしい。何か判るような気もする。
川端康成、大江健三郎、（候補だった）三島由紀夫、谷崎 潤一郎、みんな普通の感覚を持った日本人からすれば、特異な存在。村上春樹に対する評価はいつも賛否両論。私はこのノルウェーの森はいい読み物だと思う。しかし文学作品ではない。彼の作品ではいつも誰かが自ら命を絶ち、主人公がセックスの相手を見つけるのに何の苦労もない。これは文学とはいえない。ノーベル賞を取るには格が小さすぎる。
