　三島由紀夫や滝井孝作が芥川賞の選考委員をつとめていたときに、この中に収録された芥川賞受賞作『夏の流れ』を絶賛したそうです。読んでみた感想は素直にタイトルの通りで、読んでいると絶賛される理由も分かってきます。個人的にこの短編集は僕も褒め殺したい。インパクトが強いとか感動的だとかいう訳ではないのですが、緊張感のある情景を硬質な文体で淡々と描いたところに強い魅力を感じます。ハードボイルド的というか（刑事物じゃないですよ）。特に表題作は死刑囚と看守の日常という奇抜なテーマをわざわざ巧言麗句で飾り立てず、例の文章でその対比を描ききっているのですからもうたまりませんね。ストーリーに引きつけられ、文章に感じさせられ、贅沢な短編です。そのほかの短編も遜色なくいいですよ。ただ、ちょっと茂木健一郎の解説は期待はずれだったかな……
　値段の方は文庫にしては高いだろというところですが、講談社文芸文庫は字が大きくてさらっと読み通せるので（デザインも好きです）、お財布にいくらか余裕のある方なら買っても損はしないと思います。是非手にとってみてください。

丸山健二といえば『虹よ、冒涜の虹よ』のような壮大な大長編のインパクトが強いかもしれませんが、本書『夏の流れ―丸山健二初期作品集』に収録された短編は読み易いです。
極限まで無駄を排した簡潔な文章で描かれた世界の緊張感を存分に味わうことができます。
どの作品も登場人物の会話のリズムがワンパターンかな、という欠点も目につきますが、透徹した人間観察に基づいて深く掘り下げて描かれた人間描写は、並の二十代の人間では成し得ぬものです。

肩肘張って構えてかかる必要はないと思います。さらっと読んでさらっと忘れて、でも忘れ切れずに心の中に残る何かがあったなら、それでいいのではないでしょうか？

　男性芥川賞作家では、まだ史上最年少記録受賞保持者の丸山氏のデビュー作に賛辞を送った選考作家は、瀧井孝作氏や三島由紀夫等でした。特に、瀧井氏は文体等に厳しい作家でした。その人が、べた褒めでしたのですから、丸山氏の力量はたいしたものです。
　改めて、収録作品を読むと、古典になる名作ばかりであることを再確認しました。現数年書いてきている、私が「観念小説」と呼んでいるものを、次は初期・中期のスタイルで書いてほしいものだと思っています。
　丸山氏が敬愛している、室町時代の大和絵『日月山水図屏風』(金剛寺)の、作者不詳の画家をモデルにした次回作を期待しているのですが、それは無理な話でしょうが、いずれにしても、現在の日本文学を最先端で引っ張っている作家であることは間違いありません。
