吉川英治さんは、新・平家物語を書き上げて、すぐにこの作品の執筆を始められたとか。驚きのひとことです。
僕は、高校時代のこの本を読みましたが、大変勉強になりました。というのも、この時代は多くの英雄が出ているのですが、相関図や背景がわからないばかりか、時代が何を基本に動いているのかわかりませんでした。
楠正成が忠孝の士といわれても、元は土豪の頭です。新田義貞も華々しく活躍するのですが、最後は朝敵だった足利尊氏が幕府を開いてしまうのです。まして、南朝と北朝に分かれて天皇家までが分裂。複雑な時代です。この時代を、モチーフもって、ひとつの物語として語られたのは、吉川英治さんだけと言っても過言ではないような気がします。
この本を読むことによって、当時の歴史を理解することができました。同時に、忠孝の士楠正成や天皇家の家事情を見ることもできました。
新・平家物語に並ぶ大河ドラマです。誰が、英雄だったのか。歴史を紐解く物語であり、必読の書です。

民主党が大勝するだろうと予想され、その通りになった今回（2009年８月30日）の総選挙の前後を通して、民主党にすり寄る輩が目につく。また、自民党の党是に賛同したわけでなく、単に権力が欲しかったがために自民党に属していたと思われる議員もあぶり出されてきたように思う。

朝廷側が勝つか、幕府側が勝つかは、結局どちらにすり寄る輩が多いかの戦いとも言え、その点、今の時代も太平記の時代も同じなのだと改めて気付かされる。

教科書的にいくら歴史的事実を並べ立てても、歴史と言うものがが見えてくるわけではない。本書のような歴史小説から入り、後に作者のフィルタによって歪められた部分を明らかにしていった方が、歴史を学べると思う。
