上杉謙信をテーマにした小説は沢山ありますが、その中でも本書は
“謙信らしさ”を特によく表している一冊だと思います。
永禄四年の第四次川中島を中心とする短期間の物語ですが、それでも
多くの人が謙信に抱く清潔さや理想を追求するための厳しさ強さ、
そしてロマンチシズムなどが嫌味無く十分に描かれています。

執筆された時代に因るところの、近年の研究からは史実とはいえない
部分もありますが、見事な状況描写でバランスを保ち、物語としての
興味を失いません。ちなみに巻末文で、本書は太平洋戦争勃発時に某誌
に連載されていたものとの解説があり、それが当時の著者の戦争観を
映しているいうような意見が述べられていますが、そこに哲学はあった
としても、政治性は無いものと考えます。そのような重苦しい理屈を
私は一切感じませんでした。

初鹿野伝右衛門、鬼小島弥太郎、斎藤下野守など甲越の両将士に纏わる
エピソードも読者を引きつけるものがあり、またそれぞれの人物も魅力的です。
もちろん武田信玄には至っては、人物・組織・軍略まで、謙信とは見事
なまでのコントラストを映し出し、これもまた大変魅力的な好敵手として
存在感を示しています。

私は以前、特に謙信に肩入れするわけでもなく、信玄も含め、時間が
あれば様々な武将や大名をテーマにした読み物を目にするようにして
いましたが、本書を読んでからはすっかり謙信ファンになってしまいました。
それ以来、何度も本書を読み返しています。それはもちろん本書の謙信
に魅力を感じるからです。

終盤にある村上義清との問答の中で、読者は義清の苦悩に触れ、また
人間上杉謙信の苦悩も知らされますが、そこには義清を諭しながらも
自分自身に道義を説く謙信の真摯な姿があり、感動を覚えます。それは
とても熱いものですが、しかし清々しくもあるのです。

私の忘れられない一冊です。

題名の「上杉謙信」と聞けば、伝記小説と思った方も多いはず。
ですが、この本は違う。物語の中心として描かれているのは、
川中島の合戦のみ。時には信玄側の描写も交えながら、じっくりと
話は進んでいきます。巻末に注釈があり、当時の勢力分布さえ頭に
入っていれば誰でも読めます。歴史文学として楽しめる、
とてもよい本です。

本書は武田信玄との幾多の合戦の中で最も激戦となった第四次川中島の戦いを中心に書いています。
読み出すと、手に汗握りつつあっという間に読みきってしまいました。
ことごとく信玄の裏を書いた策略で歴戦のつわものである信玄を翻弄する姿がかっこいい。
謙信が信玄に単身切りかかるシーンは現実にあったかどうかという議論もあるようですが、大将自ら敵陣に切り込んでゆく姿がかっこいい。
村上義清に対して、自分はなぜ戦をするのかを語っている部分がかっこいい。
また、後ろの章で信玄が塩の入手が困難となっている際に救いの手を差し伸べるシーンもでてきますが、やはりかっこいい。
自分にとっての戦国時代の最大のヒーローは文句なく上杉謙信です。
