世に名高い「赤壁の戦い」が最大の見所。若き二人の知将、孔明と周瑜が、曹操のお株を奪う見事な計略をもって大勝利を飾り、魏一強時代の終焉を高らかに世に示します。ただ、この戦いを見るにあたって、戦術面だけに着眼するのは、もったいない。戦いの裏で進行する「政治的な戦い」もまた、さながら戦場のごとき熱を帯び、注目に値します。
魏と対峙して、がっちり手を結んでいるかに見える劉備と孫権。が、それぞれの看板軍師、孔明と周瑜は、お互いの大義と実利を絡ませあいながら、早くも「赤壁後」まで見据えて、丁々発止の「知の戦い」を水面下に繰り広げます。敵か味方か定かならぬ、なんという外交の奥深さ。多くのビジネスマンが部下に読ませたい本として推すのも、まさにこのあたりの「交渉事の深淵」を体感してほしいからでしょう。
軍師が前面に出た「赤壁」の一方で、猛将の胸躍る見せ場「長坂坡の戦い」もあります。ここでの主役は、関羽の陰に隠れがちであった張飛と趙雲。魏の大軍の中からただ一騎で劉備の子を救出してみせる「趙雲の一騎駆け」。たった一人で、長坂橋の上に立ちふさがり、彼らしからぬ思わせぶりな演出と、実に彼らしい豪胆な一喝で曹操を退けてみせる、「張飛の仁王立ち」。彼らの名声を不動のものとした、あまりに有名なこの大活躍をもって、劉備は滅亡を免れ、形勢逆転の足がかりを掴みます。
超人的な知略と武勇、そして、盛者必衰のダイナミズム。戦国の世を彩るあらゆる要素が凝縮されて、読者を飲み込む、恐らくシリーズ八巻中で最も華やかな一冊です。

赤壁の戦いを描く全編中のクライマックス。
中でも、趙雲子龍が敵軍の中から玄徳の幼子阿斗を救い出す長坂橋の攻防は男子たるもの（この言い方はあまり好きではありませんが）泣かずにはいられません。
中学生の頃読んだ横山光輝の漫画を思い浮かべながら読む度に高ぶってしまいます。

強大になった魏の曹操軍が呉をうちにゆく赤壁の戦いの巻。
孔明の弁により魏と全面対決することとなった呉の周瑜は火計を用いて魏軍を粉砕するもののその後孔明の才を恐れて多くの策を弄します。
ギリギリまで追いつめられた状況で全力をもってこれを克服した呉ではありますが、大勝ののちは余計なことをして空回りの連続です。
結局空回りする周瑜は孔明に翻弄されるのみで最後はこの世を去るはめに。
実生活に照らし合わせてみると、呉の行動には多く学ぶべきところがあるような気がしました。
