再び、京の都に姿を現した武蔵。心に留めていた
本阿弥光悦との再会を果たし、陶器や書画を眺め、
誘われるまま光悦、紹由と共に、六条の遊郭に登楼ります。

灰屋紹由や遊び敵の烏丸光広卿に冷やかされつつ、
座興の夜は更けてゆきました。
そこで、２代目吉野太夫に野趣あふれる趣向の中、
緊張と弛緩、相伴うことが理にかなうことを
静かに諭されます。

今までに無い、駘蕩な日々を吉野の元で過ごした武蔵を
雪辱を期するおびただしい吉岡一門が待っていました。
世に名高い「一乗寺下り松」です。

厳しい鍛錬を経て、吉野太夫のもてなしも味わい、
お通の心情、城太郎の純真も手の内にした武蔵は
人としても、大きくなったようです。
自らの心の声が少し聞こえるようになった武蔵は
相手の動きや、気が手に取るように分かります。

そこへ行くと鍛え方の根本から違う吉岡一門、
武蔵の敵ではありませんでした。

いよいよ目が離せません・・・・。

この巻のラストのほうでは、
武蔵が一人で戦うには、
膨大な数の鉄砲や槍をもった敵と戦います。
これほど、ドキドキしながら、読書したことはありません。

宮本武蔵を是非一巻からよむことをお薦めします。

中間のクライマックスである一乗寺下がり松の決闘がこの第四巻です。ここで感動のお通との再開もありますし吉岡との最後の決闘があります。吉川英治さんの深い哲学もはいっています。
