　生前は川端康成と並ぶ新感覚派の旗手として一世を風靡したが、現在は読まれることも少なくなった横光利一。「夜の靴」は、疎開中から終戦をそこで迎えた、日本海に面した寒村での生活を淡々とつづった随筆である。
　横光が読まれなくなった理由は、ひとつは彼の十五年戦争へのあいまいな態度表明のためであり、もうひとつは新聞小説家としてクオリティ追求と共に読者サービスを心がけたことが裏目に出たことだろう。新聞作家として名声を博した作家の多くはこのような憂き目に遭っている。死後、人気分の評価が減殺されるためである。これは横光利一にとっては本意ではなかったはずだ。
　本作は、受けを狙ったジャーナリスティックな要素は微塵もみられない。おそらく最初は発表を意図したものではなかったのかもしれない。しかも、彼の健康状態がこの頃から悪化していたこともあり、同じ病を患った堀辰雄を思わせる、生への透徹したまなざしがみられる。
　さらに特筆すべきは、弟子筋にあたる森敦「月山・鳥海山」との共通性だ。これは単に舞台が地理的共通性を持つだけではない。おそらく、森敦はこの名作を成すにあたり、師横光のこの作品を精密に研究したのではないか。そんな気がする。

　文句なしの名随筆だ。森敦の芥川賞受賞作「月山・鳥海山」も是非読んでおきたい。
