　マンガ版日本昭和史を期待するとダメ。水木しげる氏の波乱万丈の生涯をその時代背景と共にマンガで描いている本です。私は元々、水木まんがファンであったせいか、大変面白かったし、水木氏のノン気というか楽天的な不屈の姿勢に生きる勇気を与えられました。又、戦争についての部分は同著者の『総員玉砕せよ！』と内容が大幅にダブっていますが、こちらの方が長くて詳しいし、事実通り（らしいの）でずっと充実感があります。小林よしのり『戦争論』の解毒剤としてはやっぱりこちらの方がお薦めですね。ただ唯一難点として、解説をねずみ男が担当している点に違和感がありました。

本巻「満州事変~日中全面戦争」では、本人のエピソードとして、のんのんばあの死、ひだる神、父のバタビア行き、ドーナツを食べた話などが収められています。

筆者は高等小学校を卒業したのち、就職することになります。大阪の製版屋に住み込みで働きますがクビ。べつの印刷所に就職するも、これもまたクビ。両親のすすめで美術学校に通いますが、これも長続きしません（山の中で小人に遭遇したのはこのころ）。ここで筆者は一念発起し、上野の美術学校をめざすべく、中学卒業の資格をえるため園芸学校を受験。ところがたった一人だけ不合格。筆者は本巻で怪男児ぶりをいかんなく発揮しています。

なお卒業してからの筆者の様子（209ページ以降）については、「落第王」という自伝マンガをリライトしています（ちくま文庫の『奇人怪人大図鑑』に所収されています）。

第２巻の本書は昭和８年の参謀本部での皇道派と統制派の口論から昭和１４年のノモンハン事件までを描く。万宝山事件など細かい出来事も採り上げられている。マイペースで生きる著者、「のんのんばあ」の死、ジャワに向かう父など身の回りの出来事を織り交ぜてある。
