今まで自分が無意識の内に別の人格に変貌する話はあったかと思うが、この作品のように意識がはっきりとした状態で他人の人格にゆっくり移行していく話は無かったのでは無いだろうか。生体への脳移植は、実例（成功例？）が無い中空想の域を脱しないとは思うが、生々しい描写により現実に起こっているような錯覚に陥ってしまった。最愛の人が愛せない、好きだった絵が書けない、他人を見下す（殺意を抱く）など、考えただけでも恐ろしく、脳の神秘性に不気味さすら感じてしまったのは私だけでは無いかと思う。人間の脳に興味がある方は是非読んで見て欲しい作品である。一つ理解できないのは、橘直子が身の危険を感じながらも、身を呈しても調査し続けたのは脳医学探求の為なのか別の理由もあるのかという事である。それだけ、脳は学者に取っても神秘的な存在なのだろう。

すごくリアルに自分が自分でなくなっていく過程が描かれている。「生きているということは自分が足跡を残していくことだ」という一文には深く納得。アルツハイマー患者は自分が残した足跡が消えていく。でも主人公、純一は自分が残してきたはずの足跡がどんどん他人のもののように思えてくる。どちらも生きていくのが空しくなるだろう。でも愛する人を愛したい気持ちがなくなっていくのを止められない、しかもそれを自覚しているという点においては後者のほうがつらいだろうと思う。最後に純一があの絵を描き残してくれてよかった。

　辛く悲しくそして切ないお話でした。自分が変わっていく、それも自分の意図に反して・・・。もうそれだけで気が狂いそうになると思う。読んでいて胸が痛かったです。
　ラストは涙がでました。「よく頑張ったね。」と成瀬さんに言いました。
