うーん…この作品、ミステリといって良いのかどうか悩む。「謎を中心に物語が進展する」のがミステリと定義するのならば、広義の意味でミステリになるのかも知れないが、いわゆるトリックだとか、アリバイだとかと言うものを中心とするものとは一線を画する。むしろ、東西冷戦を背景としたスパイ小説と言った趣だろうか。
この作品、１９９０年の作品だが、アメリカで新保守主義が台頭していた数年前であれば舞台として不適切であるし、また、遅くてもダメだった。翌年にはソ連そのものが崩壊してしまったのだから。東西冷戦が終結に向かい、一方でその現状に対する不安感、反発が存在していたという時代を感じさせる作品と言えよう。「現代史を題材にしながら歴史に裏切られ、傷つけられた作品」という文庫あとがきにある著者の言葉は強く感じるし、その一方で、強く時代を反映したものであると思う。ソ連崩壊から１５年近く経ち、東西冷戦も過去の歴史になりつつある現在では余計に、だ。
もっとも、その一方で現代にも通ずる分析が各所にあるのも確かだ。テロによって高まり、反撃を求める人々の愛国心であるとかの描写は、２００１年の同時多発テロ後のアメリカの様子と見事に一致する。また、アメリカに根強く残る聖書原理主義であるとかも同様だ。そういう部分的なところでのリアリズムは健在だろう。
作品そのものとして見るなら、様々な場面が同時多発的に展開していくため、それぞれの事情がわからない序盤はやや混乱するかも知れない。また、日本が舞台ではない、というところも、地理的な感覚などが少し掴み辛いかも知れない。ただ、それはある程度までで、中盤まで行けば全く問題ないだろう。
時代を感じてしまうのは確かだが、だからこそ、当時の空気に触れてみるのも良いかもしれない。
