「子どもを喪った父親の復讐」を綴った手記から始まる構成は、
ニコラス・ブレイク『野獣死すべし』に倣い、扱われる事件の
テーマが、家庭の悲劇や病理であるところは、ロス・マクを
意識した、と作者自らが語る本作。

しかし、そうした、サスペンスとハードボイルドの手法を融合させることで、
最終的に作者が描き出すのは、名探偵の思考を先読みし、それを自らの
計画に取り込んでいく、メタ犯人（超犯人）の存在でした。


名探偵は、誰も救えず、事件の黒幕を告発できないどころか、
人びとに破滅をもたらす歯車にすぎなかった――。


名探偵の特権性に対する作者の懐疑のまなざしは、必然的に、
ミステリという形式そのものにも向けられていくことになります。

個人的に、法月綸太郎の最高傑作と思う。
本格ミステリ作家として、はっきり言って
彼のミステリのトリックなどはたいした事はない。
しかし、小説として読んだ場合断トツの面白さだと思う。
その最たる作品がこの「頼子のために」である。

名探偵法月綸太郎シリーズ第3作。
僕なりにカテゴライズさせてもらうと、これは『手記解析もの』にカテゴライズされる作品である。この『手記解析もの』で一・ニを争う傑作は同じ島田荘司の『占星術殺人事件』と『眩暈』だと思うが、当初提示された『手記』が分析を続けていくうちに予想以上の深さを持ったものであることが分かっていくところに醍醐味があると思う。(特に『眩暈』)
つまり、ある文章の矛盾点をあらゆる面から積み上げていき、そこから当初第一印象として与えようとしていた印象を粉砕して真相にたどり着くというものである。次々とその顔を変えていくその印象こそ、プロットと筆力が問われる部分で本作はかなりの出来栄えである。

最後の答えの部分は同じ娘を持つ親にしてみると、ちょっと無理があるかなぁ、と思えてしまうがなかなかである。
